Ginekologė papasakojo, ką tenka pamatyti kabinete: tokiais momentais išties nusvyra rankos Gydytoja akušerė ginekologė Viktorija Ežerskienė sako, kad savo praktikoje turėjo keletą atvejų, kai moterys atvyko konsultacijai, nes nebeapsikentė skindančio nemalonaus kvapo ir pačios užsičiuopė darinį. „Tokiais momentais išties nusvyra rankos, – pripažįsta gydytoja.
Letter to Irish Times,
Cervical Check Scandal
I have been a gynaecologist now for 20 years and have worked in Ireland and Lithuania, including five years as an onco-gynaecologist in the National Cancer Institute in Lithuania . I currently live in Ireland and have my own gynaecological practice. One thing I have noticed is that, it seems to me, regular gynaecological check ups do not seem to be a routine part of women’s health in Ireland. In the light of the recent cervical smear scandal perhaps this should change.
Reading and trying to keep up to speed with the current cervical cancer crisis, some questions arise. In some of the cases now in the public domain, one particular question keeps coming up. Why and how did no one else notice the cervical cancer? In one particular case, a daughter recalls that her mother had a smear test that showed nothing but within one year her mother was diagnosed with Stage Three Cervical Cancer. She recalls that they knew there was a problem when bleeding started.
In my considered opinion, however, the person who took the smear test (a nurse/g.p.?) should surely have noticed that all was not right by even the most cursory examination of the woman’s va**na and cervix. How anyone who took this smear test could not have noticed something was wrong is beyond me. Any gynaecologist would have to have noticed something amiss with the cervix. Our son was born in Ireland and even with my own wife I noticed that there was very little gynaecological examination. The question that keeps popping up in my mind concerning the stories in the public domain now is how did no one else at any stage not spot the arrival of the cervical cancer until it was too late?
I appreciate that this is a slightly different issue to the one over the delays in telling women the revised and correct results of their tests. However, in cases where some of the women have had children within the ten-year gestation period of cervical cancer it is my belief that if those women had had proper gynaecological examinations their lives might have been saved. I am further convinced that if regular gynaecological check ups with a gynaecologist became a feature of women’s health in Ireland the general well-being of the female population in Ireland would greatly benefit.
In all tragedies, especially in the sad case of the death of any patient, there is an onus on everyone to look at all the things that can be done to ensure such never happens again. Will recent events cause a sea change in the culture of women’s health in Ireland?
