Children as young as 16 are seeking cosmetic procedures such as fillers and “baby Botox”, prompting renewed calls for stricter legislation to protect minors from an anti-ageing culture driven by social media.
Legitimate cosmetic clinics say they receive multiple weekly enquiries from under-18s seeking aesthetic treatments, while also dealing with the fallout of botched procedures, including teenagers presenting with blackened lips from blocked blood vessels after self-injecting or attending unregistered practitioners.
Industry professionals have said unregistered injectors are travelling to the UK to complete one-day training courses before returning to Ireland to offer high-risk filler procedures.
They often advertise cut-price treatments on social media and source unregulated products online.
Adrian Epstein, owner of Changes Clinic in Tallaght, Dublin, said: “We get enquiries two to three times a week from girls between 16 and 18.
“We have kids coming in every day asking can we do fillers. They soon realise we don’t offer services to children. Unfortunately, there are many who will.”

I was really pleased to be interviewed by the .ie about the growing issue of underage people receiving injectable treatments. What genuinely concerns me is that many minors are turning to non-medical injectors simply because registered medical professionals will not treat them and rightly so. Doctors know that injecting a minor is unethical and could cost them their medical licence. Non-medics, on the other hand, are not registered and are not truly accountable to anyone.
There needs to be far more regulation and awareness around the risks of non-medics performing injectables. A non-medic does not have the medical training to properly interpret a medical history, recognise risk factors, or identify and manage complications when things go wrong.
Social media has a lot to answer for. Young people are constantly exposed to unrealistic, filtered images, while injectable treatments have become cheaper and easier to access through non–medically led clinics. This combination is placing vulnerable young people at serious risk and it’s something we can no longer ignore.
It is of my opinion that it should be a criminal offence for non-medic to inject an under 18.
