If you want to run faster, bike longer or see some of that hard-earned muscle show through, you need to understand body composition. Learning about your body composition is key to your optimal performance and appearance because it can help you strategize an exercise plan in terms of your need to lose fat, build muscle or both.

Body composition testing determines how much of your body is and isn't fat. The non-fat part of your body is called lean tissue, which includes your muscle, water, bone and organs. Lean tissue is known as metabolically active tissue, the tissue that burns calories all day. The more lean tissue you have, the higher your resting metabolic rate will be. The fat part is body fat. Body fat is a storage form of energy and therefore has a very low calorie demand.

This is a very accurate testing technology using frequencies to get a very accurate reading. This unit does not calculate empirical data like your inexpensive handheld devices that only use a single frequency and are very inaccurate for the most part.

How do we measure body composition?

One simple, and reliable method is the BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis) using a special BIA medical instrument. It is a proven scientific method based on the principle that muscle, fat, and water respond differently to a small electric impulse. Proper test preparation is necessary to give reliable results.
Electrodes are attached to specific areas on your wrist and ankle. A small electric impulse which you will not feel (in the same way when you have your heart ECG test) will produce different responses from your muscle, fat and water measuring your body composition.
Studies show that BIA test using proper equipment correlates with a high degree of accuracy and reliability with under water, gold standard test but without its high costs and inconveniences.
No radiation is involved. The test is safe and painless, and takes a few minutes.

Body Composition Analysis

Breaks down your weight as it relates to Total Body Water, Dry Lean Mass (Protein & Minerals), Body Fat Mass. Since muscles are made of protein, an increase in Dry Lean mass signals an increase in muscle. Adding your Total Body Water and Dry Lean Mass together will give you your total Lean Body Mass; this includes muscle, water, bones, organs (everything in your body that is not Fat). An increase in Lean Body Mass and decrease in Body Fat Mass is considered a positive improvement in body composition.
