Allergy? Aromatherapy can help (What,why,how..)

Allergy is one of the most common and widely spread health issues. Tons and tons of papers written about its nature, how to avoid, what to change, possible connections with other health problems and so on and so on. In any pharmacy all around the world you will be offered at least one option of over-the-counter medication for preventing suppressing allergy symptoms. I am not going there.

Let’s talk about how to enjoy Spring (Summer, Autumn, Winter, Life in general) without using often strong chemical medicine?

In shirt what is allergic reaction? The allergy is actually the reaction of your, for some reason, overprotective immune system to any kind of substance (allergen), which is normally harmless for the human body. As a result, poor one with overprotective immune system can suffer from symptoms such as:
• Runny or not breathing nose,
• Red itchy eyes
• Cough (could be bronchospasm, asthmatic reaction), overproduction of mucus
• Skin (dryness, inflammation, itchiness)
• Fever
• Diarrhea
• Headache…
All this symptoms are mostly caused by the processes of inflammation and your body self-cleaning processes.

Here is the list of the most helpful Essential oils for allergy:

🌿Peppermint Essential Oil - has a cooling effect on the respiratory system and can help open up airways. Moreover, Peppermint EO is a great treat for the Headaches, while it helps to release spasms and inflammation processes. Possible contraindications: May cause skin irritation and should be avoided during pregnancy and for children under 6 years old, can trigger seizers for people with epilepsy and should be avoided if using anticoagulants

🌿Lavender Essential Oil – Has anti-inflammatory and calming properties, which may help alleviate allergy symptoms such as sinus congestion and itchy eyes. Possible contraindications: Generally considered safe, but should be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy

🌿Eucalyptus Essential Oil – one of the most effective EO for respiratory system. Contains eucalyptol, which has decongestant and expectorant properties, and may help clear sinus congestion and improve breathing. Possible contraindications: Should not be used with children under 10 years old or people with certain medical conditions such as asthma. Also could cause seizures for people with epilepsy

🌿Lemon Essential Oil - Contains limonene, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and may help reduce congestion and itchy throat. Possible contraindications: May cause skin irritation and increase sensitivity to sunlight

🌿Frankincense Essential Oil - Has anti-inflammatory and immune-stimulating properties, which may help reduce allergy symptoms and improve overall immune function. Possible contraindications: Generally considered safe, but should be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy

🌿Tea Tree Essential Oil - Contains terpinen-4-ol, which has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties, and may help reduce nasal congestion and respiratory issues. Possible contraindications: May cause skin irritation, and should be used with caution in people with allergies to other plants in the myrtle family.

How to use these Essential Oils?

You can use this oils in diffuser mixing them or separately (not more than 2-5 drops altogether), taking into consideration your health limitations of yourself or others who live next to you

The word “Aromatherapy” nowadays is really popular and widely used in absolutely different meanings and combinations.

So WHAT is Aromatherapy officially (will not call it “scientifically” but pretty close to it) and WHY it really works.

Aromatherapy is the practice of using Essential Oils (natural plant extracts) for therapeutic benefit.

Historically plants were used for treating different conditions for centuries. In different times and cultures people were using different ways to get benefits from the plants – brewing, drying making extracts, mixes, applying exactly onto the body, drinking, inhaling and so on and so forth.

The modern aromatherapy uses Essential Oils (EO) – concentrated hydrophobic liquid, extracted from the plant using modern technologies. This concentrate contains a large amount of volatile (easily evaporated at normal temperatures) molecules of chemical compounds, which, thanks to their size and volatility, goes straight to your body (in comparison with taking a pill, which first get to your stomach or intestines and there already chemical compounds in some amount will go to your system… or may be not).

WHY Aromatherapy works?
That is simple – because of their volatility and concentration which get to your system (that what mentioned above) and, as bonus knowledge, if you get into the chemical compounds of different EO, you will see same chemicals which are often used in modern pharmacology.

What can Aromatherapy help with?

OOOOh! Lots and lots! It can help to balance your mood waves (calm you down and prepare for the sleep or give you more energy if you are on the low track in the middle of the day and many other options), help to deal with inflammations, bacterial diseases, different skin conditions, pain (headaches, muscular, some internals, PMS), detoxification, cold, some hormonal issues and so on and so forth.

WHY do you need a specialist in aromatherapy?
Well, not necessarily. If you understand essential oils on the level of compounds and their combinations – you do not need anyone to use them. BUT if you are not sure, better to consult with specialist. Essential oils can influence your permanent medication and/or chronic conditions or give some side effects to you or those who live with you (including pets!). Also almost all Essential oils have their contraindications – they are concentrated remedy, remember!

CAN YOU USE ESSENTIAL OILS INSTEAD OF MEDICATION YOU WERE BRISCRIBED?
NO!!! That is addition, not substitution. If you have a prescription for the medicine, do not cancel it without the permission of your doctor.
PS Some doctors have knowledge of EO and you can just ask if you can use them instead. BUT DO NOT CANCEL WITHOUT YOUR DOCTOR!

And the last one: QUALITY of ESSENTIAL OIL MATTERS. While it is strong concentrated mix of chemical molecules you want to know what exactly you are getting into your body!

December 2022 was a tough month. And one of the problems was the abundance of viruses just hanging in the air and waiting to check in our bodies. Cutting to the chase – my husband got COVID with all flu-like symptoms 😷🤧(cough, running nose, fever, sore throat, headache, weakness). And, because I was away at the moment, the only way I could help remotely is to name him oils to blend and put to the diffuser.

Using the blend resulted in soothening the symptoms and, I would assume, improving his overall condition (he was not taking any antiviral drugs).
