FACE AND EYES
Although the idea of a facial may seem like pure indulgence, they are actually one of the best ways to keep skin radiant, smooth and blemish-free. So much so in fact that beauticians recommend you have a facial once a month, like clockwork.
The main benefit of a facial is that it aids the skin’s natural exfoliation process, which ensures the surface of the skin is free from dead skin cells and other debris to make room for new skin cells that keep the skin looking younger for longer.
There are many different facials to choose from these days, from the simple cleanse, exfoliate and moisturise facial to new-age facials using aromatherapy, oxygen sprays and even acupuncture.
Here’s the low down on a few of the more popular specialist facials you’ll find on the menu in a day spa:
Aromatherapy Facial – designed to balance and heal the skin as well as working to unwind the mind and relax the body. The beautician will choose an essential oil to combat the problems with your skin, such as chamomile as an anti-inflammatory for rashes, lavender to soothe stressed skin, tea tree oil for acne-prone skin, and aloe vera for dry or sunburned skin.
Like a basic facial, an aromatherapy facial has a process of cleansing, toning and exfoliating, as well as a mask to remove impurities and a relaxing acupressure massage that strokes the 14 pressure points on your face. This type of facial will leave you feeling relaxed and leave your skin looking refreshed, clear and revitalised.
Oxygen Revitaliser – works to put life back into your face that toxins such as car fumes, cigarette smoke and sunshine take away. Skin is a respiratory organ so as it takes in oxygen the cells feed off it improving the skin’s health and the blood circulation. An oxygen-based facial gives the skin cells a boost of oxygen to temporarily increase circulation and give the skin a rosy glow. Over time this improved circulation will stimulate the shedding of dead skin cells making the face healthier, cleaner and smoother.
This type of facial usually involves deep cleansing, steaming, exfoliation and a detoxifying routine that draws out impurities, after which your face is sprayed with a special oxygen substance and left on for 20 minutes before being massaged into the skin.
Sea Treatment – a relatively new facial but one that is proving hugely popular across the UK is the sea treatment, which involves covering the face with nutrient-rich algae, kelp and seaweed. It may not sound like much fun but these natural products are rich in vitamins A, B, C, D, K, iron and magnesium that help to detoxify and moisturise the skin.
A sea facial will leave skin looking radiant and revitalised, as well as helping the skin to hold moisture better. A facial of this kind usually starts with the basic routine followed by a seaweed or algae mask, which is left on the skin for up to 10 minutes.
If you have fine lines or dark circles around the eyes then maybe it’s time you splashed out on a specialist eye treatment at a beauty salon near you. Among the most popular eye treatments is the collagen eye mask, which involves putting cooling collagen gel around the delicate eye area to smooth away fine lines and reduce the look of dark cirlces to lessen the signs of ageing.
It's the classic nailcare dilemma: You've given yourself a perfect manicure, only to find chips and nicks just one day later. To help keep polishes lasting longer, nailcare expert and celeb manicurist Jessica Vartoughian suggests first making sure your nails are clean and free of any oils or creams, before the manicure begins, as any lingering products "on the nail plate will hinder the polish's ability to adhere." Next, gently file the nail in one direction "to make sure there are no rough edges,", then "cover the entire nail with polish, including under and over the nail and on all sides and edges." Finish the manicure as normal, then apply another layer of topcoat the day after, "to help keep nails in tip-top shape."
For when you don't have time for a full-out manicure—but still need your nails look neat and clean—celeb-manicurist and nailcare expert Jessica Vartoughian offers these easy steps for a quickie mani: "First, start with clean, dry nails. Massage a cuticle oil (preferably one with natural jojoba) into cuticles and nails to make them look pink and healthy, and if necessary, file nails so they are smooth and evenly shaped. Next, wash hands to make sure excess oil is removed, then apply two coats of the appropriate basecoat treatment for your nail type, followed by two coats of a light, sheer color. Finish with a fast-drying top coat to give nails a high gloss shine. The light polish color will hide any polishing imperfections, and your cuticles will look and feel pampered."
Makeup as a gift :
Buying yourself a new lipstick or mascara is great therapy, but makeup is also a good idea when you are picking out a gift for a girlfriend. If you want to surprise the woman who is always so quick to give you a shoulder to cry on, here is a list of makeup suggestions according to their rating.
First place: Face powder – the basic element
Face powder can brighten the complexion, hide enlarged pores or small wrinkles, sculpt the face or remove the shine of oily skin. Yet the best quality of face powder is protecting the skin from harmful environmental hazards and not allowing dirt and pollutants to clog the pores. Give your friend a nice, pretty powder brush, because face powder is better applied with a brush than a sponge applicator.
Second place: Lipstick – the school of seduction
Full soft lips always look so sexy. There are many lipsticks that along with visually enlarging the lips also moisturize them and add extra shine, making them even more tempting. Good lipsticks contain vitamins and moisturizing elements and are suitable for sensitive lips. Before buying lipstick for your friend make sure that she is not allergic to any of the ingredients or buy one of a brand you have seen her use before.
Third place: Concealer – the secret weapon
Concealer is truly a woman’s best ally. It can help you out in desperate situations, hiding your pimples, freckles or signs of fatigue. It is a great gift, but you have to be sure that your friend uses foundation regularly, because concealer is applied only over or under foundation. Choose concealers which do not contain fats, because otherwise they will facilitate the formation of blackheads. Many of the quality concealers contain tea tree oil or other anti-bacterial agents.
Fourth place: Foundation – the must-have
Foundation is the base for all makeup. It enlivens your face color, evens out the surface of your skin and covers up small imperfections. Oily skin can take advantage of the foundations with a matting effect. Mixed skin types should use liquid foundations and dry skin should seek out foundations with a thick, velvety texture. You can also buy foundation with toning, nourishing or lifting components.
Coloring particles in the foundation can seep deep into the pores and clog the outlets of the sebaceous glands. This can have some unpleasant consequences for oily skin, so if your friend has this skin type, you should either select her foundation more carefully or go for another present altogether.
Make your eyes larger and more expressive:
Having mesmerizing, expressive eyes is every woman’s dream and one of the reasons behind the existence of decorative cosmetics. When trying to visually reshape your eyes, makeup is your best ally as long as you keep in mind that black and dark colors make the eye look smaller. If you wish to optically enlarge your eyes add eye shadows beginning at the inner corner and working outward eventually using darker tones as you near the outer corner. Use lighter and darker nuances of the same color for best results.
Step one – the choice
Select a light neutral color of shades. For example, walnut or honey color for darker skin and gray tones for a paler complexion.
Step two – defining the guidelines
Look in the mirror and using your finger as a guideline place it horizontally to the point where the peak of the fold of your lid meets the brow bone. Add eye shadows only to the area below your finger.
Step three – the method
The brush that you use to apply eye shadow should be soft and flat. Apply shadows with horizontal strokes following the guideline of your finger.
Step four – application
You can paint outside the boundaries of your eye toward the outer corner, but keep within the guidelines determined by your finger. Blend all nuances smoothly to avoid creating contrast and looking like a clown.
Step five – the finishing touch
There should be no great difference where the eye shadows end and the skin on your temples begins. If there is a contrast, do your best to blend the shades as close to your skin as possible. If you do this right, you will create the illusion of bigger and wider eyes.
