UNDERSTANDING THE HEART  #9: HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE- Another major risk factor for Heart Disease is High Blood Pressure which is often a hidden and common problem. If you don’t measure blood pressure just like Cholesterol, you won’t know it is damaging your Heart. Blood Pressure is the force against blood vessel walls as the heart pumps blood. It can be measured with a simple blood pressure cuff (see slide). Blood pressure is reported as two numbers such as 120/80. The upper number is the pressure that the vessel feels when the heart has contracted and the lower number is the remaining pressure after the heart relaxes. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 and Pre-Hypertension is between 120-130/80-90. Diet and lifestyle change including weight management is recommended at this level of blood pressure. Above 130/90, consult a medical doctor(see chart). Only 1 in 5 people treated for high blood pressure controls it because many stop their medication or if overweight fail to lose weight. UNDERSTANDING THE HEART #8: PROTEIN AND THE HEART- The Importance of Protein to maintain the Muscles in your body such as those in your arms and legs is well-known, but did you know that the Heart also has Muscle Cells that depend on the right amount of protein in your diet? Muscle is the main tissue in the Heart and has fibers similar to Skeletal Muscle, but the Cardiac Muscle Cells are shaped differently and make up Muscle that curves around the heart chambers so that when they contract they pump blood efficiently out if the heart and then fill the heart when they relax. Like the Process of Protein Synthesis and Breakdown in other muscles, amino acids from the breakdown of Heart Muscle proteins are released into the blood between meals and when you are sleeping and not eating. Amino acids from Protein in the diet enter the heart muscle cells after meals increasing muscle protein synthesis (see slide). You need the right amount of Protein at every meal and after exercise to support your Heart Health. While Fats and Cholesterol get the most emphasis in Heart Health, it is also important to get the right amount of Protein to support the heart muscle along with Balanced Nutrition and a Healthy Active Lifestyle!!! to learn more go to www.drdavidheber.com and

UNDERSTANDING THE HEART  #6: REDUCE YOUR RISK- Now that you understand your Heart, you are ready to Reduce Your Risk of Heart Disease. Increased Body Weight and Body Fat especially Abdominal Fat and Inactivity increase your risk of Heart Disease by increasing Blood Pressure, Blood Cholesterol, and Blood Sugar levels. Increased waist circumference (see slide) indicates that the amount of body fat deep in your belly under your abdominal muscles and around your intestines and organs including the kidneys and liver is increased. Overweight and Obesity with a waist size greater than 42 inches in men and 35 inches in women is a risk factor for heart disease. To reduce risk Stop Smoking, Eat a Heart Healthy Diet with the right amount of Protein at every meal and after Exercise, Colorful Fruits and Vegetables, Fiber, Fish or Fish Oil Supplements, and Plant Proteins like Soy. Do Aerobic and Resistance Exercise with purpose to keep your Heart Healthy with Balanced Nutrition and a Healthy Active Lifestyle!! Next time, I will talk about Cholesterol!!! UNDERSTANDING THE HEART  #5: HEART BEATS- The Heart is a muscular pump that sends blood to the lungs and around the body, but what controls the pace of Heart Beats that contract and relax the Heart muscle? Like other muscles, contractions are triggered by nerve impulses that are generated locally in the heart. The signals start in specialized nerves called the Sino-Atrial Node (see slide) and spread to the large muscle called the ventricle. This electrical activity can be detected at the surface of the skin by an electrocardiogram (see slide) or even a smartwatch. The beats shown as regular peaks should occur 60 to 90 times per minute. If the heart is beating too fast, there is not enough time for blood to fill the ventricle causing fatigue, rapid pulse, or a Heart Attack. Atherosclerosis can also affect the heart beats and a Heart Attack can stop the heart. Stress, too much coffee, and stimulant drugs can increase heart beats. Balanced Nutrition and a Healthy Active Lifestyle will help maintain a Healthy Heart!! Next time, I will talk about Reducing Your Risk!! UNDERSTANDING THE HEART  #3: HEART ATTACK - A Heart Attack is the sudden blockage of a part of the Heart’s blood supply. The walls of the Heart’s blood vessels can collect immune cells and Cholesterol over many years. (see slide). As long as this buildup is slow, the heart can grow new tiny vessels in the heart muscle to protect itself. However, these plaques can become unstable and bleed suddenly. The blood colts and bocks blood flow causing a part of the heart muscle to die (see slide). If it is a large enough part of the heart muscle, then the heart’s pumping can be reduced. The regular beating of the heart can stop or become irregular as blood flow to the nerves in the Heart is reduced. Emergency restarting of the heart with an electric pulse and external heart massage through the chest can be lifesaving. Over many years, obesity, high blood pressure, poor diet can increase the risk of a Heart Attack. The process of thickening of the artery walls is called Atherosclerosis and can occur in blood vessels in many organs including the brain. Balanced Nutrition and a Healthy Active Lifestyle can help you maintain your Heart Health!!! Next time, I will talk about Artery Inflammation and Atherosclerosis!!!
