The Difference Between Salon & Supermarket Shampoos
--------------------------------------------------------------------

The quality of the shampoo is an area I always make sure my customers understand. It’s like almost anything you buy: you can invest as much or as little as you desire but, generally, the more you spend, the higher the quality of product.

A salon shampoo is a lot more likely to be of better quality and will have been produced with higher quality ingredients. It will also be a lot more concentrated, which means it will last longer as you need to use less of it each time you shampoo your hair (essentially providing you with better value for money). Furthermore, supermarket shampoos often have a much higher percentage of water and sulphates, and less of the good stuff: vitamins, minerals and oils.

The reason supermarket shampoos are cheaper is because they aren’t actually made by dedicated cosmetics companies – they are instead manufactured by multi-faceted companies who produce a wide range of home care products, and in vast quantities. It’s similar to comparing mass-produced high street shoes to a pair of Loakes.

How to Wear Graphic Prints
---------------------------------

Graphic prints are all over this season. These fashionable, smart and grown-up graphic prints look modern, bold and fun! But, you need to be careful while picking a print to make sure it suits your body type and doesn’t look garish. We tell you what to keep in mind while donning this trend.

Size and shape:

When wearing graphic prints, the key is to keep them proportionate. Make sure prints are small for smaller garments such as skirts and scarves. If you’re wearing a printed dress, ensure that you balance it out with minimal make up and a simple hairstyle.

Body type:

If you are curvy, feel free to experiment with bigger prints but if you are on the petite side, then big prints are a no-no. If you are on the heavier side, pick smaller prints as they will make you look slimmer.

Keep it minimal:

Coordinate your prints with neutral tones such as jeans or a white skirt. Keep your accessories minimal to draw more attention to the print.

Prints to pick:

This season is all about experimenting with bold and beautiful prints but one has to make sure that it’s not too busy and overpowering. If you are not confident, start with picking tailored separates over a busy dress. Oversized floral prints work great for day wear. Vertical prints create an illusion of a slimmer silhouette.

How to Choose the Right Deodorant
------------------------------------------

If we go by TV commercials, deodorants are potential matchmakers — spray some and you will have the opposite s*x going weak in their knees. With such irresistible ‘possibilities’ and promises, it’s no surprise that you want to give almost every new deodorant a try. But before randomly buying any product, it’s important to know about its contents. Read on to know more about how to buy the right deodorant:

Know the contents
--------------------------
Deodorants that contain harmful chemicals can be hazardous. For example, there are safer deodorants — available over-the-counter — that don’t contain harmful chemicals like aluminium chloride. Many ingredients in deodorants can cause skin irritation, which ranges from mild redness and burning sensation to a full allergic reaction, warns dermatologist Dr Smriti Shetty.

Avoid alcohol-based sprays
-----------------------------------
Deodorants and antiperspirants prevent body odour caused by bacterial growth. Cosmetic dermatologist Dr Sadhana Deshmukh says aluminium compounds — present in most deodorants — and other active antiperspirant ingredients are often dissolved in alcohol because it dries quickly and feels cool on the skin.

“A small percentage of people are allergic to aluminium and may experience dermatitis or allergic, axillary granuloma response. When applied to the axillae (underarms), it could be irritating and may promote sensitisation to other ingredients in the product. If this happens, consult a dermatologist. To avoid the problem, I would suggest an alcohol-free deodorant,” she advises.

Sensitive skin?
----------------------
Most deodorants are alcohol-based and contain antibacterial properties — the reason why they remove the odour. Perfumes can’t remove body odour, but their fragrance lasts longer. The sweet smell of a deodorant, on the other hand, is short-lived. Whether expensive or cheap, almost all deodorants contain 6-15% solution of fragrance oil mixed with 80% of alcohol. Perfumes usually contain 15-25 % of fragrance oil in pure alcohol.

“If you have sensitive skin, pick one without much fragrance. Also, cheaper deodorants and fragrances can lead to cosmetic allergy, contact sensitisation, lichenoid reactions, macular or patchy pigmentation — the last may spread from axillae to face, neck, chest and even abdomen and needs to be treated. So, be careful while choosing a deo. Apply it only on the underarms; do not spray it on the entire upper body. Perfumes should be applied on clothes and not on body,” cautions Dr Deshmukh.

Steer clear of these chemicals
-------------------------------------
Dermatologist Dr Smriti Shetty gives a list of chemicals that you should avoid in deodorants:
Aluminum-based compounds are active ingredients in antiperspirants. They block the sweat glands, thus preventing sweat from reaching the skin’s surface. Some studies have suggested that aluminum compounds may be absorbed by the skin and can cause changes in the estrogen receptors of breast cells. Parabens in their many forms — Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Ethylparaben, or Butylparaben —are a class of artificial preservatives widely used in cosmetics and personal care products. They are being investigated for their possible role in breast cancer. Most conventional deodorants contain a slew of toxic chemicals, such as Aluminum Chlorohydrate, Parabens, Propylene Glycol, Triclosan, TEA (triethanolamine), DEA (diethanolamine), FD&C colours (artificial/synthetic colours approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for food, drug and cosmetics), and Talc (hydrous magnesium silicate), among others.

COMMON SKIN CARE MISCONCEPTIONS
------------------------------------------------
With all the buzz and hype about must-have skin care treatments, revolutionary new products and amazing "expert" advice, consumers are inundated with information — some of it true and some not so true. Let's put these common misconceptions and skin care myths to rest.

Myth 1
---------
You know your skin care products are working when your skin tingles

That tingling sensation isn't telling you the product is working — it's telling you that your skin is irritated and inflamed. Though your skin may look or feel cleaner right now, over time the use of these tingling products can do damage to your skin. Irritants can break down collagen and elastin, and actually damage your skin's healing process.

Myth 2
--------
You should switch your skin care products every few months because your skin adapts

This is simply not true. Your skin does not adapt to products, rendering them ineffective. Your skin might stop improving as much as it did initially — but that's because your skin may have needed more help when you first started using a particular product and now your skin is healthier.

Myth 3
--------
All women eventually outgrow acne

Unfortunately, this is a circumstance where men have an advantage over women. Men typically outgrow acne because after puberty their hormone levels become steady. However, women have hormone fluctuations throughout their lives — due to menstrual cycles, pregnancy and so on. Women can suffer from acne well into their '20s, '30s, '40s and beyond.

Myth 4
--------
A product with SPF 30 provides twice as much protection as SPF 15

In reality, SPF 30 provides only about 4 percent more protection than SPF 15. To maximize your sun protection, apply sunscreen generously, reapply often (especially after being in the water) and avoid being in the sun during peak hours.

Myth 5
--------
Age spots are inevitable as we get older

Age spots actually aren't due to age. Though it's more likely to have age spots at 40 than at 20, age spots are actually caused by years of exposure to UV light. Genetics also contribute to how susceptible a person is to age spots. True age spots are harmless. However, many women choose to lighten them for cosmetic reasons. Always use daily sun protection to help avoid age spots.

Myth 6
--------
Greasy foods cause acne

Though greasy foods are probably not the healthiest choices, there's no evidence that they cause acne. In fact, dairy products and citrus products are more likely to cause acne breakouts than greasy foods or even chocolate.

Myth 7
--------
Blackheads are due to dirty skin

Though they are dark in color, blackheads are not dirt and you can't just wash them away. Blackheads are caused when your skin produces too much sebum. Dead skin cells get in the path for the sebum to exit through the pore. This blocks the pore, creating a clog. When the clog nears the surface and oxides, it turns black. Don't try to scrub blackheads away with a regular facial scrub. Instead, find products that contain salicylic acid that exfoliates inside the pore to dissolve away the dead skin cells and oil.

Jazz It Up with Ear Cuffs
-----------------------------

Statement pieces have been a rage this season whether it’s cocktail rings, cuffs or the much-spotted accessory on the runway - the ear cuff. The accessory, which is a native in the desi market, was revived by brands on the international runway this year; and the best part is there's a cuff for anyone who wants to add a little edge to their cartilage.

A new trend on the jewellery scene that's got nearly everyone clamouring is the ear cuffs. A stalwart of the 90s, the ear cuff is making a comeback in a big way. Not only is it around to hug the top of the ear, as per tradition, but designers have been getting a bit crazier, often encompassing more skin or even designing pieces to sit around the ear. The addition of ear cuffs can change your entire look; for example, an ear cuff with black stones and dragon motif can give you a punk look whereas one with kundan and drop earrings attached at the bottom can be worn with traditional attire like a lehenga or sari.

Ear cuffs are one of the classic accessories that not only exemplify retro style, but with a contemporary design pattern, can make you look elegant. There are different types of ear cuffs to fit every woman's preferences - like diamond ear cuffs, diamond vintage ear cuffs, pave ear cuffs, antique ear cuffs and many more styles. So, it’s vital to select a ear cuff that will balance your face shape and complement your style, personal taste and the occasion. Even if your style isn't super edgy, adding a cuff is an easy way to give any outfit a cool, stylish feel.

Just stick to one ear cuff. Unlike regular earrings, the look is meant to be uneven. Then be sure to show it off by pulling one side of your hair back into a half updo, a high bun or a side-swept hairdo.
