How does an Osteopath exactly treat?

21/02/2022

For Osteopaths, working on diaphragm has always been an essential part of the treatment.
Diaphragm divides the body into two compartment, the thorax above and the abdomen below. It was given great importance by the founder of Osteopathy, Dr Andrew Taylor Still.

Reasons:

1) Being an major respiratory muscle, it increases the overall breathing capacity having beneficial effects in conditions of COPD.

2) Diaphragm is well related to the abdominal organs either directly or through ligaments, Having a relaxed and well moving diaphragm increases the mobility, motility and functionality of the organs. It helps to relieve constipation and other visceral complaints.

3) Diaphragm is attached to thoraco lumbar spine. Treating diaphragm has an impact on spinal conditions like backpain.

4) Through diaphragm passes the Aorta, Inferior Vena Cava, Thoracic duct, Sympathetic chain, Vagus nerve. Well functioning diaphragm balances our autonomic nervous system. Also it increases the venous and lymphatic return of the body improving overall health and Immunity.
