They will conveniently forget the manipulation, the gaslighting, the silent treatments, the triangulation, and the calculated cruelty that left you in pain. What they will do instead is take your breaking point—your reaction to everything you endured—and twist it into the entire narrative. Suddenly, you become the crazy one, the bitter one, the unstable one.

They know exactly what they’re doing. It’s part of their smear campaign. By controlling the story, they protect their false image and cast themselves as the innocent one. They want others to see you as the aggressor, so no one ever questions them or looks deeper into what really happened. To outsiders who don’t know the full truth, their version of events can sound convincing. That’s because narcissists are skilled storytellers—masters of deception who use charm, half-truths, and selective memory to rewrite history in their favor.

But the reality is this: your reaction was not the problem. Your reaction was a very normal, human response to months or even years of mistreatment. No one can be endlessly invalidated, disrespected, and hurt without eventually reaching a point of emotional exhaustion and breaking. The narcissist will never admit to causing that. They will never own the cruelty, the betrayal, or the abuse. They will only magnify your reaction so they can continue to hide behind the mask of being “the good one.”

This is why so many survivors of narcissistic abuse struggle with self-doubt. You end up questioning yourself because their story is so convincing and one-sided. But deep down, you know the truth. You know what you lived through, what you felt, and how much you endured before finally reaching that breaking point. Remember this: the truth doesn’t need defending. It stands on its own. Their lies may fool people for a while, but reality always reveals itself in time.
