Nice to get in the marketing for the Jersey marathon! And it looks like I'm in the lead. If only there wasn't 26 miles still to run! Tempting me back though for another stab at it to beat my time. How are all the New Year resolutions getting on? Remember to stay focused, make them measurable and realistic so as to see clear progress and help with motivation. Good luck!

20 for 20! That was my goal for today and I managed to squeeze it in. What are your goals for this year? Will it be to finally get that ni**le sorted so you can get back to training? (my favourite resolution for you!) Get into that outfit from 5 years ago? Learn a new language, master a new skill? Whatever it is, make it measurable and realistic. Break goals down into chunks and keep ticking off the achievements, that's what will keep you going and keep you focused. A lovely chap told me he put a sticky note of his 5km run time he wants on the cupboard he keeps the crisps, his particular weakness! What a great idea. Whatever it is good luck and keep smiling, a bit of positive energy goes a long way.

So I've been trialing my 80/20 running for a fair while now and trying to achieve 50+ miles a week. I've found it pretty tough going! Life just gets in the way of training! I try and aim for a 'run all day pace' in my long runs which certainly helps with motivation in regards to dreading trying to run myself into the deck every time I went out. Just thinking relative effort and time feels like the runs are much easier, even if they're a long way. I also feel my body is far fresher and able to be exercised more often, leading me to think this would certainly help with injury prevention.
I'm itching to race to see what it's doing to my overall times but I'm living with the odd treadmill 5km, which are getting quicker. You're earning your money getting outside at the moment so keep up the good work, each run currently is worth two on a sunny, calm day!
I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year. Thank you to everyone who's supported me in the clinic, its greatly appreciated and I hope I've shared a bit of my enthusiasm for keeping fit, healthy and loving your sport!

'cheating' 5km on the treadmill! Dare I say it but the new training program may be working?!
Running slower to run faster?! Ever in search of better, more efficient / effective training to improve my times, I've started to follow a different running program. In essence this involves more slower, longer runs and short high intensity ones. The aim is to build fatigue resistance and better efficiency. Proof is in the pudding so keep an eye out for my occasional 5km effort and any races. Age is no barrier to improvement!

Well I chugged round in the wind and got close to beating the elusive sub 3 hr marathon! 3.02, so not bad for an old boy, must be the new trainers. I came 16th overall which was very pleasing but its that time I want! Thank you for all the kind words and support. Well done to everyone who gave it a go, great fun.

Not long to go now, so hopefully you've all had a good night's sleep and breakfast has been tucked away giving plenty of time to digest. I always eat the same thing so my tummy knows what's coming. Weather looking pretty good so should be all set for a great race. Good luck and enjoy it, I'll see you on the starting line

Not long to go now before the big day. You may well have been fuelling up on pasta for the last 48hrs and are feeling good to go. Think about your hydration also as you want to be (forgive me) peeing clear to show you've enough water in the system. Remember the golden rule, don't eat anything new! Stick to readily digestible carbohydrates, so avoid that big steak meal til after you've run! Good luck and let's hope that wind keeps dropping. Remember, enjoy it, running is great fun!!

That's my last big run before I start tapering down for the marathon in a couple of weeks. It's really important you give you body time to recover and strengthen over this period, there's nothing to be gained by pushing it hard now with so little time to go. Starting the race with fresh legs could be the difference between a new PB or hitting that 20 mile wall! Good luck and let's hope that wind drops!

On a boiling hot day we whizzed round the east of the island. Thank you to my running partner Gary, who pushed me round to a new PB. Definitely him and the new trainers! Congratulations to everyone who took part and thank you to all who organised and helped out, another great event.
Good luck to everyone running the half tomorrow. Make sure you get all your kit out tonight and get yourself in to bed early, so you can get up a couple of hours before the race to have a good breakfast. Don't eat anything new! Stick to what your tummy knows and he careful on the coffee, caffeine can cause unwanted movements! I'll see you all on the start line.
