Talk about people going through heavy matters in there life. This one takes it all and inspired me that there shall be brighter days, keep on keeping on a day at a time

'That first day's initiation into the regular Jamesburg population quickly made me realise that I was no longer a member of a sane society. In order to insure my feeble existence in this chamber of horror, I would have to forget about ethics and morality, etiquette and formality.

Jamesburg thrived on, and gobbled up, every ounce of strength, animal cunning, and physical dexterity a person could possibly muster. At the end of every day I found myself physically and mentally exhausted, but thankful that another day I hadn't had to kill someone for the privilege.

Though it should have served to cultivate strong minds and healthy bodies, Jamesburg did the opposite. The administration looked upon and and used the inmates as simple automated labour tool who were placed at the beck and call of the state legislature to enhance New Jersey's child slavery system.

We were sent, conveyor-like, through the prison system - from Jamesburg to Annandale to Bordentown to State Prison - and made to work like dogs, with the death house coming as the ultimate reward.

Most of the Jamesburg kids had only committed the same violations of rules as had endeared Huckleberry Finn to millions of people, but in us society found these deeds intolerable.

Not many of us had committed what could be called serious crimes, but, serious or not, once caught we were thrust into the same degrading criminal categories as an adult offender. Even down to having the same strait-laced parole.

Thus, general opinion of Jamesburg's population was that we were criminals before we got there, would remain criminals throughout or stay, and would be hardened criminals when we left.

The public's attitude was, work us as hard as possible, feed us as little as they could get away with, and beat the hell out of us whenever we got out of hand. That was the institutional policy, and it worked too. Sometimes.'

'Boxing, I discovered, carried with it a heavy price. Of the 88 opponents I faced as a pro, more than half are either dead, destitute or in jail.'
