CLIMATE CHANGE RESEARCH ALONG THE INDIAN OCEAN aimed at boosting the Ocean’s natural ability to absorb carbon dioxide.

The project tests Ocean alkalinity enhancement, a technology that involves adding natural alkaline minerals to accelerate carbon dioxide absorption and examining how marine organisms especially planktons respond to adjusted alkalinity levels.

The study brings together Technical University of Mombasa ( ), Geomar Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research from German, Kenya Marine and Research Institute (KMFRI) and Ocean Climate Innovation Hub Kenya. Scientists say the findings will help determine whether the technology is safe and to identify its potential to generate high value

MARINE LITTER WORLD WIDE ANALYSIS

Based on global analyses, marine litter is a severe environmental crisis dominated by plastic, with approximately 11 to 23 million metric tons of plastic waste entering aquatic ecosystems annually. Experts estimate that as much as 12,000 million metric tons of plastic waste will be in the natural environment by 2050.

60.23% Plastic (general)
9.02% Fisheries plastic (nets, etc.)

0.94% Cigarette butts
~35% of all litter is single-use plastic

Sources of Pollution
Land-Based: Approximately 80% of marine litter comes from land-based sources, carried by rivers, wind, and runoff.
River Inputs: Roughly 1,000 rivers are responsible for 80% of the annual global plastic inflow into oceans.
Sea-Based: The remaining 20% comes from fishing (ghost gear), shipping, and aquaculture.
Fishing Gear: Over 46% of plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch consists of fishing gear.

Banking and telecom/mobile operator agents are considered data controllers or processors under Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019, because they handle, collect, and store customers' personal and sensitive data. The ODPC is hosting a specialized registration drive from February 23–27 to assist these agents in complying with mandatory registration requirements.

Kenya National Carbon Registry, our CEO Jackson Kiplagat acknowledged the efforts of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Forestry, Nema Kenya, and GIZ. He highlighted the importance of having a centralized tool to support the growth of the country's carbon market ecosystem.

‎Official Launch: Kenya inaugurated its National Carbon Registry (NCR) on February 17, 2026, to position the nation as a leader in high-integrity carbon markets.
‎Centralized Management: Operated by NEMA, the registry oversees the tracking and verification of carbon credits and Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs).
‎International Standards: The platform ensures full compliance with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and implements safeguards to prevent the double counting of emissions reductions.
‎Sector Integration: It merges existing forestry carbon data into the system to better support national reforestation and conservation targets.
‎Economic Growth: Building on a 2024 milestone of 20 million tons of credits, the registry aims to boost revenue for businesses and fund local community development.

2025 Port Performance Outlook

Port initiatives- KPA is increasing capacity at the port of Mombasa with the rehabilitation of berth 19B currently 30 percent. This will increase capacity by a further 300,000 TEUs annually.

Planned construction of Berth 23 and 24 to increase capacity by 1.1 million TEUs annually.

KENYA KWALE NYOTA FUND PROGRAM

Launch of Nyota programme Business Start Up disbursement to 5800 youths drawn from Kwale, Mombasa and Taita Taveta County.

The Beneficiaries are drawn from 70 wards in the three Counties,30 wards in ,20 in and #20 in Taita Taveta.

The beneficiary will receive ksh 25,000 in the first phase of this ksh 22,000 will be deposited directly to each beneficiary 's mobile phone account.

Already 300 youth and women led companies in kwale County have secured tenders from my government with a total 400 youths and women led companies Registered in the County.
