Being overweight increases the risk of developing diabetes type 2, heart diseases, circulation problems, respiratory issues and joint problems, but being underweight can also put your health at risk, studies show.
If you’re underweight, it’s likely that your meals are missing important nutrients and you’re not eating a balanced diet. However, genes, lifestyle habits like smoking and being a professional athlete may also be the cause of a too thin body.
Some people are naturally thinner and find it difficult to gain weight, but contrary to popular belief, thinner doesn’t always equal healthier. In fact, those with a “lean gene” may be more prone to a series of conditions, including hormone problems, diabetes and fractures.
To maintain your health, aim for fit instead of thin
One is considered underweight if their body mass index is below 18.5. Being too thin increases the risk of bone fractures, as in thinner people bones tend to have a lower density.
In women with normal bodyweight and even in those who are slightly overweight, the risk of fractures is lower as fat leads to a higher production of estrogen, and this hormone contributes to stronger bones. As the estrogen production decreases, either with age or due to weight loss, bones become thinner, more porous and brittle, thus more likely to break.
The decrease in estrogen production, that is a consequence of weight loss, affects the menstrual cycle and one’s ability to conceive, and increases the risk of nausea and miscarriage in women who are already pregnant. Men who have a lower BMI are also likely to suffer from fertility problems, quality of s***m being affected in underweight subjects.
Another common problem in people who are too thin is the increased risk of nutritional deficiencies and immunity problems. Not eating enough food can be the cause of a low BMI and can lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies, calcium and iron being just two of the micronutrients that are often lacking from the diets of under
