The Rare "Impossible" Horizon: Boston’s 2026 Selenelion 🌕🌅

Early yesterday morning, March 3, 2026, the city witnessed a rare phenomenon known as a Selenelion (or horizontal eclipse).

Geometrically, a Sun and a totally eclipsed Moon are 180 degrees apart, meaning one should always be below the horizon while the other is above it. However, thanks to atmospheric refraction, Earth’s atmosphere "bends" the light, allowing both the rising Sun and the setting "Blood Moon" to be visible at the exact same time.

For a brief window around 6:16 AM, the copper-red Moon hung low in the West-Northwest while the Sun began to break over the Atlantic in the East-Southeast. This specific event coincided with the total lunar eclipse, creating a stunning visual of the "Worm Moon" right at the edge of the horizon.
