8 REASONS YOU AREN'T LOSING WEIGHT
2. Genetics Arenât Working in Your Favor
---------------------------------
It's a tough reality: It may not be possible to choose the body type or shape you want and effortlessly land there with the right diet. When it comes to weight, âgenetics matter a lot, although people donât like to hear that,â says Jason R. Karp, PhD, the author of Lose It Forever. He calls out older research on Swedish twins who were raised together or separately. âThe results of this and other twin studies have shown that genes account for about 70 percent of the variation in peopleâs body weight. Thatâs a pretty large influence,â says Dr. Karp.
In addition, there's the theory of the set-point weight range, which is the range that your body is essentially happy at. Itâs where you might land if youâre living a healthy and happy life (translation: eating nutritiously without restricting yourself, and exercising but not overly so). If you try to reduce your weight too far below your set point, âyour brain â not your willpower or your conscious decisions â responds to weight loss with powerful tools to push your weight back up to what it considers normal,â says Karp. An article published by the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center describes this idea of a set point and notes that slow, gradual weight loss is the key to altering your set point.
What to do If you donât want to gain weight back after losing it, youâre going to have to continue to eat fewer calories, says Karp, and, as Beth Israel notes, do it slowly. This means dropping no more than 10 percent of your body weight each six months; for a 160-pound woman, that would be 16 pounds in six months.
If this seems tough to swallow, consider that this knowledge can be hugely positive â and actually freeing. It can allow you the opportunity to give yourself grace for the body youâre in rather than punishing yourself because you havenât hit a goal weight or aesthetic or because you lack âwillpower.â You can use it as reinforcement to practice healthy habits that make you feel good, regardless of what jeans size you ultimately end up in. Past research suggests this weight-inclusive approach leads to more improved health outcomes in comparison with an approach focused only on being in a smaller body. It may take a lot of self-work, and a HAES ("health at every size") dietitian can help you make this shift. The Association for Size Diversity and Health (ASDAH) provides a search tool to find experts in your area.

REASON YOU AREN'T LOSING WEIGHT
1. Your Gut Health Is Interfering
-------------------------------------
Emerging research is uncovering just how important your microbiome â the collection of bacteria in your gut â is for your health, and potentially for your weight. A meta-analysis published in the March 2018 issue of the journal Genes looked at participants who incoporated interventions that favorably affect the microbiome, such as taking probiotics or prebiotics, and found that those people experienced a reduction in their body mass index (BMI) and fat mass compared with placebo.
What to do Begin by increasing the prebiotics in your diet, suggests Kirby Walter, RD, who owns The Nourish RD in Chicago. âPrebiotics are fiber that feeds the good bacteria in your gut. You could be taking all the probiotics, but if you donât feed this good bacteria, it canât proliferate and overtake the bad bacteria in your gut,â she explains. Increase prebiotics in your diet by focusing on fruit and vegetable intake. Embrace variety (green beans one day, kale the next, and then a tomato salad) to give your gut a range of prebiotics that will keep it happy.

COMMON WEIGHT LOSE MISTAKE
You go for fat-free desserts over the real deal
--------------------------------------------------------
When you want something sweet, fat-free, sugar-free options seem like a smart choice for weight loss. But researchers at Cornell University found that overweight people who choose low-fat versions of snack foods rather than the regular kinds consume, on average, twice as many calories. "The terms 'fat-free' or 'sugar-free' can create a green light effect, triggering people to eat more," says Cynthia Sass, RD. But many fat-free foods have about the same number of caloriesâor moreâas their full-fat counterparts. And because they lack fat, they won't fill you up and will leave you wanting even more.
Go for reasonable amounts of the real thing. If you love ice cream, have a small scoop of the full-fat version. "You won't stick to a diet that doesn't include your favorites," says David Grotto, RD, author of 101 Foods That Could Change Your Life. Bottom line: Life's too short for forbidden foods.

COMMON WEIGHT LOSS MISTAKE
You overestimate your daily calories
---------------------------------------------------------
Only 11 percent of Americans correctly estimate their ideal daily calorie requirements, according to one survey. The rest of us tend to overestimate, says Bonnie Taub-Dix, RDN, creator of BetterThanDieting.com and author of Read It Before You Eat It: Taking You from Label to Table. For example, you assume that you consume 2,000 calories a day, but it's really going to take 1,800 calories a day for you to lose weight. Those extra 200 pounds are enough to keep about 20 pounds on your frame. However, it's important to note that while you should be mindful of how many calories you're consuming, you shouldn't let it rule your life. It's better to focus on the quality of your calories and eat foods that are nutrient-dense, like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats.

COMMON WEGHT LOSS MISTAKE
You don't get enough sleep at night
------------------------------------------------------------
If you're been having a hard time breaking through a weight-loss plateau, it could be the result of your evening habits. Not getting the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep at night, mindlessly snacking before bed, and eating a heavy dinner can all contribute to weight gain. To help you unwind, do something relaxing and calming at night after you get home from work. Taking a bubble bath, reading a good book, or journaling can help you clear some headspace for rest. This will help you make healthier choices at night, including going to bed earlier.
