Nowadays, there are numberless skincare products saying they are “low pH”. Is it just a marketing gimmick or something that we should take a look at? If it is worth paying attention to, what does it exactly mean, and how does it affect my precious skin? Let’s figure it out.

To give you a concrete foundation to decode the “low pH”, I want to tell you some sort of a scientific definition first. So don’t panic. The pH (Potential of hydrogen ion) is related to the concentration of hydrogen ions. Higher concentrations are more acidic (like lemon), whereas lower concentrations are more alkaline (like detergent).

The pH scale ranges from 1 to 14, with 7 at the center denoting neutral pH-neither acidic nor alkaline. A pH lower than 7 is acidic, in vice versa, it is alkaline. The ph within the body range from 7.35 to 7.45, thus the body’s normal pH is close to neutral.

However, the skin pH is different. Skin can be divided into the dermis (inner layer) and epidermis (outer layer). Normally the molecular size of skincare products is too large to pe*****te epidermis and reach dermis, so we better focus on the pH related to epidermis.

The epidermis is basically acidic. The ph of the top epidermis layer, the stratum corneum, drops to between 4.5 and 5.5. This is the normal pH range of the skin surface.

If you use the skincare product with the pH level of 7, the epidermis pH would increase to between 6 and 7. Then, the skin produces fewer enzymes that create Ceramide, Cholesterol, and Fatty acids which are all the key ingredients to make up lipids (natural adhesive making the skin barrier concrete).

Consequently, the skin barrier gets weaker and starts to collapse.

To be continued........

We have our body’s immune system, which is always prepared for war with bad microorganisms. Since the micro-organisms are mostly staying here, the immune system always stands behind the micro-organisms, which form a standoff. The fight will start upon a slight trigger. They are placed near together. In front, micro-organisms and the immune system will keep on fighting. This means that our body continuously creates a system for defending against the outside and our body's immune system is completely prepared through the surface of the food pipe.

When the micro-organism enters the body which we were exposed to since young, the body creates immunity against the micro-organisms. In other words, we create immunity easily. Rather than sorting beneficial and harmful micro-organisms, it is essential to create immunity to fight against the specific micro-organisms as soon as they enter the body. Since probiotics are in such form, it is a beneficial microorganism.

The skin forms a barrier in a way similar to the gut. Both skin and gut have barriers. These two barriers have a very similar structure. The barrier makes the gut for absorbing only the necessary substances while preventing external substances. While food and nutrient easily enter the small and large intestine, the system prevents the external micro-organisms from entering. Like the gut, the skin barrier contains ceramide, cholesterol, fatty acids, and tight junctions that primarily block external substances. When the skin barrier is damaged, various microorganisms can easily enter the skin. So, caring for the skin barrier, such as moisturizing the skin, is crucial to protect the skin. It is the same as the intestinal wall. When we protect the wall, external substances can’t enter inside easily. It is the same principle.

The barrier is also covered with skin flora that forms a defense against harmful bacteria that attempt to pass the skin. This flora could be considered another biosystem. Hence, skin flora forms another barrier. Skin flora that usually exists on the skin distributes substances to block harmful bacteria. When there are too many species of bacteria that reside on the skin, this may eventually cause problems. Then, why are bacteria beneficial and necessary for the human body? When the body is constantly exposed to stimuli from harmful bacteria, the body continuously guards against such stimulation. Accordingly, the microbiome encourages the immune system to function steadily. The body’s constant exposure to bacteria triggers the defense system, the immune system, to operate continuously.

Probiotics cosmetics and so-called microbiome cosmetics do not use the microorganisms that originally exist on the skin surface. They usually the bacteria called Lactobacillus and this micro-organism mostly exists in the gut instead of the skin surface. Where do we apply Lactobacillus? We use it on the skin. Would Lactobacillus make the skin better? Applying the micro-organism is the same principle as eating them. As we eat micro-organisms, the immune system against micro-organisms called Lactobacillus gets activated. When the immune system is familiar with microorganisms applied to the skin, our body easily forms immunity against it. As the immune system gets activated to prevent other external substances from entering the body.

What if using Vitamin C and Retinol together? . Many studies show retinol enhances the vitamin C effect. However, this may not work for sensitive skin. You might suffer from burning, itching, peeling, etc big time. In that case, use retinol first and then try vitamin C.

Throw it away without hesitation. It is already fully oxidized which means it doesn't have any effect. If you receive an "already brownish yellow ampoule", return it to the seller.

Let's do this way. Add a couple of drops of the vitamin C ampoule to your moisturizer, and apply them together for a while. Especially, in the case of sensitive skin, it takes some time to get used to the highly concentrated vitamin C ampoule.

After applying Vitamin C ampoule, DON'T APPLY MOISTURIZERS RIGHT AWAY. You better wait a couple of minutes until Vitamin C fully absorbs. Because the pH level (5~6) of the moisturizer is higher than the Vitamin C ampoule (3~4), it disturbs the absorption of vitamin C.

Let's start again😊,

Numberless cosmetic brands advertise their products contain Vitamin C. But in the ingredient list, you can't see "Vitamin C" because this is not the formal name. Instead, it is written as “l-Ascorbic Acid. This l-ascorbic acid is a pure vitamin C. However, pure Vitamin C is weak to light and easily degraded by oxygen. As a result, natural discoloration takes place as we used cosmetics. When the product color changes from the original transparent color to the yellow color, the product would provide a higher vitamin C absorption rate.

Or course, the discoloration shouldn’t happen so quickly. If the product color changes to bright yellow color within a week, vitamin C in the product may have low stability. A good product would show discoloration after 2-3 months. To solve this discoloration problem, cosmetic brands usually choose a container with dark color. Vitamin C content is put into a brown or sealed container to block the light.

When the color changes beyond a certain level to become bright yellow, it means vitamin C gets fully oxidized so that it doesn’t provide any effect on the skin. So, you better use up the product quickly if it contains a high concentration of Vitamin C. Most people use up vitamin C products within one to two months. To solve many inconveniences and color change issues, cosmetic brands use small containers such as 5 ml.

To make pure Vitamin C more stable to light and oxygen, researchers started adding other ingredients to I-ascorbic acid. These blended vitamin C ingredients are called “Vitamin C derivatives”. We take ‘Ascorbic’ from I-ascorbic acid and the word ‘ascorbyl’ is added to the front or back of the derivative’s name. Examples are as follows, ‘sodium ascorbyl phosphate’, ‘magnesium ascorbyl phosphate’, ‘ascorbyl palmitate’, ‘tetra-isopalmitoyl ascorbic acid’. When you look at the full ingredient list, you sometimes encounter these kinds of derivatives.

However, although such vitamin C derivatives have excellent stability, they can’t pe*****te a stratum corneum well, and it has a much lower absorption rate. In the absorption tests, I-ascorbic acid shows a remarkably high absorption rate while other derivatives show a lower absorption rate. Due to this weak absorption rate of vitamin C derivatives, pure l-ascorbic acid is still preferred by many cosmetic brands.

Vitamin E (aka tocopherol) has a complementary chemical relation with Vitamin C. Two vitamins help each other to get back to their original state once one of them becomes oxidized. This "put together" formula makes the effect of vitamin C last longer. Therefore many vitamin C products contain both vitamin C and E together. They also contain other antioxidants such as ferulic acid or coQ10 to maximize the vitamin C effect and enhance product stability

The pH level plays an important role in absorbing vitamin C (pH 3.5). Simply put, If the skin has a high pH level, the absorption rate of Vitamin C drops. So after applying vitamin C product, you better wait a couple of minutes until vitamin C gets fully absorbed, And then apply cream or other skincare products of which the pH is normally 5.5 -7. If not, cream or lotion increases the pH level on the skin to disturb the absorption of vitamin C.

To maximize the vitamin C effect, many vitamin C products have a pH level of around 3.5 to 4 with a concentration of 15% to 20%. That might irritate sensitive skin. In that case, put 1~2 drops of vitamin C ampoule on the lotion or cream and then apply them together. Although this action may reduce the absorption of vitamin C, it will reduce the irritation of vitamin C as well. When you have sensitive or easily irritated skin. your skin needs some time to get used to Vitamin C.

These days, people argue about whether it’s okay to use vitamin C and retinol together. Many publications reveal retinol enhances the vitamin C effect when used together. However, this doesn’t work for sensitive skin. Using retinol and vitamin C together may lead to itching, burning, or uncomfortable feelings. In this case, try retinol alone and give some time to skin to get used to it. Once your skin gets used to retinol and then gradually use vitamin C together. Always, in skincare, little less is better than much more.

Stay Beautiful,
