Macrolane injections for breast augmentation can be quite disadvantageous. In addition to the cost (typical 6000 -12000 USD), they tend to form lumps and irregularities that cannot be repaired medically or surgically. In addition, reports for painful lumps after injecting Macrolane in the breasts are quite common. A recent article in Annales de Chirurgie Plastique Esthétique has looked at the level of evidence for the use of Macrolane for breast augmentation and reproted that there is no scientific data to recommend its use for this purpose and that such a recommendation is a premature one. Another article from Australia was published in the Journal of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in 2010 and they recommended high precautions before offering this treatment to patients due to the lack of evidence for safety, results and long term effects on the breast tissues and the potential for cancer development. Soon after that, the same authors reported 3 patients with severe complications following Macrolane injection in their breasts requiring surgical intervetions. For those reasons Macrolane injections for breast augmentation have been banned in several countries like England and France and will continue to be until enough scientific evidence exists for its short and long term safety for the patient.
