TEDxHamra Salon
What is TEDx? At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. What's TED?
TEDxHamraSalon is a local forum of monthly salons that aim to connect people both to ideas and to each other in an intimate environment, with the hopes of inspiring people to change their lives, their futures and ultimately their world. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx - local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experie

We often tend to think of political systems, or any system, as fixed: either it works or it doesn't. What if, instead, we thought of political systems as always needing to evolve based on our own evolving needs and awareness.
Can we tailor-make a democracy or other political system that works for us today?
In this talk, Max Rashbrooke explores just that.
3 ways to upgrade democracy for the 21st century Democracy needs an update -- one that respects and engages citizens by involving them in everyday political decisions, says writer and researcher Max Rashbrooke. He outlines three global success stories that could help move democratic systems forward and protect society against the new challenges th...

In the past decades, we have created systems that address (or fail to) problems as isolated issues. Except, they're not. From the collapse of economic systems around the world to the current pandemic, climate change and growing inequalities, all these issues are deeply interconnected.
So although climate change may seem like an irrelevant topic in a community combating economic collapse and corruption, perhaps we need to shift perspective.
For the first time, TED is organizing a live global COUNTDOWN event online for the public featuring more than 50 speakers in five curated sessions. The session will entail a blend of actionable and research-backed ideas, cutting-edge science, and moments of wonder and inspiration.
Tune in on 10.10.2020 on TED's channel on YouTube.
Global Launch Countdown is a global initiative to champion and accelerate solutions to the climate crisis, turning ideas into action. The goal: cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 and to net zero by 2050, at the latest.

What does a vision of a wildly different future look like?
It's up to us. We have to dream it up together.
In Naomi Klein's talk- link to talk shared in a previous post below- she suggests a few proposed visions from a manifesto she wrote alongside indigenous elders, climate change activists, faith leaders, and many others from different backgrounds, called 'The Leap'.
If you, like us, got curious about 'The Leap', a possible picture of the world we're fighting for, here is more:

Shocking events, like the Beirut blast of August 4th, have the potential to push a society backwards...or to create transformative positive change. What factors determine which of the two outcomes an event will lead to? How much of that is in our own hands as a community?
In this talk, Naomi Klein shares the ingredients that create positive change after a crisis. This talk was also screened during the recent TED Circles event hosted by TEDxLondon that our team was a part of.
How shocking events can spark positive change Things are pretty shocking out there right now -- record-breaking storms, deadly terror attacks, thousands of migrants disappearing beneath the waves and openly supremacist movements rising. Are we responding with the urgency that these overlapping crises demand from us? Journalist and activist Naom...

On Friday, August 21, 2020, Sir Ken Robinson passed away, leaving behind a beautiful legacy. Throughout his extraordinary life, he pushed the boundaries of what education is and can be, sharing revolutionary insights on creativity and innovation in education. He taught us how to honour the organic process through which humans grow and develop and to courageously step into the uncertainty that comes with it. His parting is a loss for the world.
Now, more than ever is a time to step into that uncertainty, to rethink our education systems, and to muster the courage to experiment with an organic process that is not guaranteed but is essential to come back to our humanity, more fully, more deeply.
May you rest in peace, Sir Ken Robinson.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce Sir Ken Robinson died peacefully yesterday, 21st August 2020, surrounded by family after a short battle with cancer.
We will be following up with a further update as we begin to follow Sir Ken’s wishes and honour his legacy.

What is TED Circles?
TED Circles, an initiative by TED, is an open platform where small groups meet for meaningful conversations about ideas worth spreading. Volunteer hosts invite individuals to gather together to discuss a variety of relevant and timely topics in a respectful and safe space. Imagine a book club for TED Talks!
Our heart goes out to all those suffering the loss of loved ones and homes due to the explosion in Beirut on Tuesday evening.
The response of care and love is evident on the streets with countless initiatives, volunteers, and opened homes and hotels for those who are shelterless.
We encourage everyone who can to help out in small and big ways, with their time, their brooms, food, water, and even garbage bags. Together, we can, and will, rebuild the city.
