Ankle sprains - An unexpected ankle sprain can happen in an otherwise healthy patient and prompt myofascial treatment may aid in the recovery process. However, ankle sprains often occur specifically because of pre-existing trigger points in the peronea/fibularisl muscles. Inhibition of these muscles causes weak ankles and allows the foot to move medially under the leg, potentially leading to an inversion sprain.

As trigger point therapists we know the referral patterns of common muscles that refer pain down the arm including the scalenes, tricep, pec major and serratus posterior superior. However, it is easy to forget that the tiny subclavius muscle can be big player.

TrPs in both divisions of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle are often diagnosed as simply "tension headache" based on the referred pain. But TrPs in the sternal division can cause cause tearing or visual disturbances that may be more distressing than the pain.

TrPs in the clavicular division of the SCM can lead to postural dizziness, imbalance or disturbances in hearing.

Bunions, also known as hallux valgus, can result from a variety of skeletal, connective tissue and muscular factors. This condition can present with both varus (outward) deviation of the first metatarsal bone combined with valgus (inward) deviation of the big toe.

A combination of myofascial dysfunction in the adductor hallucis, the lateral head of the flexor hallucis brevis and the abductor hallucis (not pictured) can conspire to pull the big toe inward and the first metatarsal outward.

Assessment and release of TrPs in all three muscles is indicated in relatively young patients with bunions that have not progressed to significant skeletal deformity.
