PH -7.2 actually is 1 over 10 to the power of 7.2. It is about the relative difference of positive and negative electron in specific measurement. It is related to coagulation of minute suspended matter in water. The high content of non active chlorine mislead new inexperience maintenance worker in keeping pool water properly treated. Good quality chlorine has less impurity and let pH in pool water remains stable. "shocking" is the process to release the non active chlorine from being "locked". Sudden raise or lower of pH leads to pH bounce. It can result in the suspended matters suddenly lose the coagulation and resulting in pool become cloudy. A more serious situation is pH bounce, and inadequate filter system would lead to pool water suddenly turn green. In Malaysia, the months of March and April is usually critical time for pool maintenance workers. The weather is hot. It causes the early break up of chlorine in treated pool water and burning of padi field becoming flying ash would result in sudden change of pH.
