LoCo Lowdown #4 β€’ Women and Cold PlungingπŸ‘ΈπŸ½πŸ§Š

There are a lot of misconceptions around women and cold plunging! Some people believe it is unsafe for women or that the stress response cancels out any benefits but current research does not support these ideas. When practiced in a controlled and supportive environment, cold water immersion can be a useful tool for supporting cardiovascular health, stress resilience, and metabolic function. βœ”οΈπŸ“ˆ

Cold exposure activates the nervous system and increases norepinephrine, a hormone involved in focus and alertness. With regular exposure, studies have found improvements in heart rate variability, which reflects the body’s ability to shift between stress and recovery. Research also suggests that consistent cold immersion may support healthy blood pressure.

Cold water exposure also stimulates the release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and noradrenaline, which are linked to mood and mental clarity. Some research suggests that repeated cold exposure may help lower baseline cortisol levels over time and support a more balanced stress response.

Cold can also activate brown adipose tissue, a metabolically active fat that helps generate heat and use energy. Studies suggest this process may support insulin sensitivity and metabolic health.

Cold plunging is not about extremes! The benefits come best from short, regular exposures and a calm approach to the practice.
