丙二醇在护肤品中作为保湿剂、助渗剂使用。对皮肤不会有害。
丙二醇是多元醇的一种，几乎无色无臭、无油腻感，并完全溶解于水，亦有防腐作用。丙二醇作为滑爽剂使用渗透性强，能帮助其他成分在皮肤表面涂开并渗入，但是作为保湿剂时抓水比例不高。
其添加量具有一定争议性，一般化妆品中，丙二醇添加比例不会超过5%，少数人使用后皮肤会产生刺痛灼热感，美国FDA认为丙二醇是属于可以安全使用的化妆品成分，但敏感肌肤避免使用该成分较好，健康肌肤则不必过分担心。
