Today we received the confirmation that Ngegeh is officially trademarked. Soon, insyaAllah, fully registered.
And somehow this moment made me remember the early days of building this brand.
When I first introduced the name Ngegeh, the reactions were… interesting.
I remember the eye rolls.
The small laughs.
The “Are you serious with that name?”
Some people mocked it openly.
Some questioned why a Sarawak brand would choose a name like that.
At one point, I even came across a post written by another brand in the same space.
They explained that ngegeh means gedik, implying that a brand with that name shouldn’t be taken seriously.
The intention was quite obvious, to make the name look bad, so people would feel discouraged from trying it.
It was strange reading that.
Because behind that one word were nights of research, formulation, failed batches, and constant improvement.
Behind it were local ingredients people often underestimate, engkabang, rice, botanicals from our own land. that I stubbornly believed deserved to stand proudly.
But in the beginning, people rarely see the work.
They see a name, and they decide the story for you.
There were moments I wondered if I should just change it. Choose something that sounded safer.
Something more “acceptable”. But something in me refused.
Because Ngegeh was never meant to be safe.
It was meant to carry a little boldness.
A little playfulness. And a little Sarawak spirit that doesn’t shrink just to fit expectations.
Today, seeing that same name officially trademarked feels surreal.
The name that once made people laugh is now legally protected as a brand.
And maybe that’s the lesson here.
Sometimes people mock what they don’t understand yet. But time has a beautiful way of turning doubt into silence.

I almost quit formulating my own products once.
Not because I didn’t love it.
Not because it was too complicated.
But because I was tired.
Tired of hearing that local ingredients are “not as effective.”
Tired of the polite smiles when I said I work with Borneo botanicals.
Sometimes the doubt wasn’t loud.
It was subtle.
And somehow that made it heavier.
For a moment, I questioned myself.
Should I just follow trends?
Should I replace what’s ours with something imported so people would take it more seriously?
But every time I went back to the lab…
every time I looked at the data…
I was reminded that the ingredients were never the problem.
The perception was.
So I didn’t quit.
I studied deeper.
I tested more.
I became more stubborn about proving that local can be world-class.
Today, when I formulate, it’s no longer just about skincare.
It’s about dignity.
And maybe that’s why I still choose Borneo ingredients, even when it would have been easier not to.
