Grading agarwood/Oudh chips has not been easy but with years of experience you can get it done without much hassle.

Wood chips has to be natural and original (I mean without polishing or heating up) .

I grade them 1st according to smell . It has to be soothing to your nose.
Then 2nd only the colors. Colors has to be well spread . Be careful dark colors doesn’t always means good. So don’t let colors ’trick’ you.
3rd the wood must be dry and light.
4th and the most important is your feeling when holding the wood.

The above are some guidelines in grading agarwood. Seriously it will take a little bit of time before you can differentiate the quality of agarwood.

My personal belief is:
Agarwood trees without inoculation will always remain as an agarwood trees WITHOUT value. You need to inoculate them to create the value.
However , even after inoculation if you don’t process them to marketable products it will still always remain as an agarwood trees WITHOUT value.
So before you decides to inoculate your trees , make sure you get an inoculator/supplier that can process your trees to marketable products ie. Oudh oil or wood chips then you can gladly says :
‘ My agarwood trees has a HIGH value’
