The most effective antioxidants are produced endogenously.

Primary-antioxidants are essential antioxidant enzymes naturally produced by our body. These internal antioxidant enzymes serve as our body’s most potent defense against free radicals and harmful inflammatory reactions. There are only 3 primary-antioxidants: SOD, Catalase (CAT) and Glutathione Peroxidase (GPx). Thanks to their complementary and synergic mechanism of action against free radicals, SOD, CAT and GPx prevent the development of oxidative stress.

Chronic renal failure (CRF) is associated with oxidative stress, the mechanism of which remains uncertain. Superoxide is the primary oxygen free radical produced in the body, NAD (P)H oxidase is the major source of superoxide production and superoxide dismutase (SOD) is responsible for removal of superoxide.

In addition to that, a study conducted on the effects of Superoxide Dismutase on Inhibition of Acute Kidney Injury by Sepsis has concluded that the optimal dose of SOD at 1000 IU for inhibiting sepsis-induced AKI incidence is compared to SOD at a dose of 250 and 500 IU. The antioxidant effect of SOD can prevent sepsis-induced AKI with oxidative stress events. (Scientific World Journal, 2021)
