According to private records of imperial physicians, Empress Dowager Cixi of the Qing Dynasty consumed full-term placentas for many years in her later life to maintain her youthful appearance. In the portrait of Empress Dowager Cixi painted by American artist Katharine Carl, despite being over fifty years old, Cixi appears charming and graceful, resembling a middle-aged noblewoman. This suggests that the placenta played a significant role in her beauty regimen.

According to historical records, the earliest recorded use of placenta for health and longevity purposes in Chinese history dates back to Emperor Qin Shi Huang, who unified China around 2200 years ago. In 219 BCE, at the age of 40, Emperor Qin Shi Huang traveled east along the Bohai Bay to inspect the borders of his kingdom in search of the elixir of immortality. After searching far and wide for such a remedy, it was found that placenta held the key. Emperor Qin Shi Huang then esteemed it as the elixir of immortality. Since then, placenta has been revered as a supreme health tonic within the imperial court.

Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF)

HGF is a growth factor derived from stem cells, with a structure consisting of 728 amino acids forming a heparin-binding glycoprotein. It originates from stromal cells and is present in various tissues and cells in both animals and humans. It acts on adjacent cells in a paracrine manner, binding to receptors on the cell surface and activating tyrosine kinase activity, thereby exerting its potent biological effects such as promoting mitosis and inducing angiogenesis.

NGF是最早发现和最典型的神经营养因子,同时也是影响神经系统最重要的生物活性分子之一,其包含α、β、γ三个亚基组成,其中β亚基(β-NGF)是唯一具有生物学活性的亚基。β亚单位通过非共价键结合而构成活性二聚体,其中,六个半胱氨酸残基之间由二硫键相连,若二硫键结构不正确,NGF将丧失其生物活性。NGF的表达水平通常在慢性神经系统疾病中增加,NGF与其受体TrkA结合激活TrkA细胞内结构域激酶和下游信号通路的磷酸化,导致神经递质的产生和异位放电,从而致使了疼痛的产生。

Nerve Growth Factor (NGF)

NGF is the earliest discovered and most typical neurotrophic factor, and it is also one of the most important bioactive molecules affecting the nervous system. It consists of three subunits: α, β, and γ, among which the β subunit (β-NGF) is the only one with biological activity. The β subunit forms an active dimer through non-covalent bonds, with six cysteine residues connected by disulfide bonds. If the disulfide bond structure is incorrect, NGF will lose its biological activity. The expression level of NGF is usually increased in chronic nervous system diseases. NGF binds to its receptor TrkA, activating the intracellular kinase domain of TrkA and downstream signaling pathways, leading to the production of neurotransmitters and ectopic discharge, thus causing pain.

IGF是一种受生长激素(GH)调节的单链多肽,由70个氨基酸组成,分子量为7649 Da,结构有45%与胰岛素相似。可由肝、肾、肺、心、脑和肠等组织产生,其中大部分在肝脏合成,再释放入血液中作用于靶细胞,以达到促进生长、调节代谢的作用。IGF有IGF-1和IGF-2两种,IGF-2,主要对胎儿的生长起作用,而IGF-1是AKT信号转导途径中的一种有效天然激活剂、细胞生长和增殖的刺激因子、细胞程序性死亡的有效抑制因子。

Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF)

IGF is a single-chain peptide regulated by growth hormone (GH), consisting of 70 amino acids with a molecular weight of 7649 Da. Its structure bears a 45% similarity to insulin. It can be produced by various tissues including the liver, kidneys, lungs, heart, brain, and intestines, with the liver being the primary site of synthesis. IGF is then released into the bloodstream to act on target cells, promoting growth and regulating metabolism. There are two types of IGF: IGF-1 and IGF-2. FGF是一类由垂体和下丘脑分泌的多肽生长因子,以肝素/硫酸肝素作为辅助因子与其受体结合从而发挥作用,FGF对成纤维细胞有促分裂作用,可通过参与调节细胞增殖、迁移、分化和凋亡在胚胎的发育和维持机体稳定中发挥重要作用。FGF有酸性(αFGF)和碱性(βFGF)两种。其中αFGF仅分布于神经组织,βFGF普遍存在于多种组织,如脑垂体、视网膜、肾上腺、胎盘、前列腺、免疫组织系统和各种肿瘤细胞中,以垂体中含量最大。

Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF)

FGF is a type of peptide growth factor secreted by the pituitary gland and hypothalamus. It exerts its effects by binding to its receptors with heparin/sulfated heparin as a co-factor. FGF has a mitogenic effect on fibroblast cells and plays an important role in embryonic development and maintaining organism stability by regulating cell proliferation, migration, differentiation, and apoptosis. FGF exists in two forms: acidic (αFGF) and basic (βFGF). αFGF is exclusively distributed in neural tissues, while βFGF is widely present in various tissues such as the pituitary gland, retina, adrenal glands, placenta, prostate, immune system, and various tumor cells, with the highest content in the pituitary gland.

Transforming Growth Factor (TGF)

TGF is a cytoplasmic protein composed of amino acids, including two classes of peptide growth factors, Transforming Growth Factor-α (TGF-α) and Transforming Growth Factor-β (TGF-β). TGF-α is produced by macrophages, brain cells, and epithelial cells and can induce epithelial development. TGF-β is a multifunctional protein synthesized by osteoblasts and chondrocytes, which exerts its biological effects by binding to specific receptors on the cell membrane, regulating osteoblast proliferation and differentiation. TGF-β has a dual effect on osteoclasts, promoting and inhibiting, and is involved in bone cell extracellular matrix metabolism, and can promote chondrocyte generation.
