Hair Growth oils and your baby's hair: What you should know.
My baby's hair is not growing, what can I use?
Can my baby of 5 months use your hair growth oil?
If i had $1 for everytime I've gotten questions like these, I'd be very rich by now. I truly cannot count just how many times mothers have asked me for hair growth oil for their babies and in my 5 years of running Carrish Haircare, my answer has always been No, you don't need it and we don't sell it.
When babies are born, some come out with a full head of hair, some others have hair in some places while some special ones like myself come out practically bald at birth, nwanyi isi nkwocha 🤣.
From my talks with mothers, I've found that many mothers are very worried and start looking for hair growth promoter for their baby especially because they already have plans for the 1 year photoshoot.
I know you want your baby to look their best in the picture however there's no need to worry yet. You don't need any hair growth oil whatever for your baby that's less than a year old.
Right now, you might be thinking but I'm not using anything harsh, I'll try something natural or even make it myself at home with just herbs and oil.
The answer is still a No whether they're made with natural herbs or not because the truth is, herbs can be very harsh, dosage matters. That something is natural doesn't automatically mean that it's safe...
Palm Kernel oil PKO or coconut oil is the only thing you need. Yes, any of these 2 is more than enough.
Apply on damp hair after bathing and comb their hair. One extra tip is to comb frontwards. That is instead of combing from front to back like we normally do, comb their hair from back to the front.
To that combing, add head rubs as well.
Fun fact: They enjoy head rubs a lot, it even helps them sleep better.
These 2 techniques and any of the oil are all the hair growth promoter you need. You should see a difference after awhile once you start.
Your baby is less than 1 year, just enjoy her, get her first crawling, sitting, walking, first words and so on
Between breastfeeding, formula, changing diapers, immunization, teething, hot weather in this country you have a lot on your plate to worry about for you to start adding hair growth oil this and that to it too
Throughout this Children's month I'll be teaching kids haircare and skincare everyday. Learn, correct and share for other mothers to learn too.

Grief also means knowing when your mum needs her daughter and when she needs a hair coach.
I let my mum wash her without first detangling it knowing fully well she'll pay dearly for it and I too because I'll be the one to figure it out later.
First picture was from 6th January, the day after her sister died.
I let it happen again a second time in April because we were in the heat of preparing for the burial and I also had a grant and pitching program that needed all my attention.
I spent more than an hour yesterday detangling it, we only did half and today or tomorrow, I'll finish the remaining half If I can get her to sit still.

You're doing more harm than good...
Few years ago, the mixing of Shea butter and tube creams for children was the trend.
It was everywhere that if you were a mother who wasn't doing it, you'll start considering it because of how common it was.
Then there were sellers who camouflaged it as mere Shea butter to unsuspecting mothers.
So these mothers will buy it, after using it and if they cannot restock at the moment from that particular seller and buy Shea butter from another person, they notice that their baby is getting darker and then, they'll start worrying.
Any time I had a consultation with mothers who are either intentionally doing it or those who have been tricked into it, I was left really sad about the damage being done and worse still the many large part of the population who do not know any better.
There's just so much clamor for fair skinned babies that you'll start wondering if dark skin is a curse.
• Funny enough, there's something very interesting about the complexion of babies. As at anything between immediately after birth to 2 years, they're complexion is still adjusting. It's not set in stone.
So you'll find that some babies could be very fair at birth and by the time they're around 2 years, they're no longer as fair.
As a mother there's a lot to focus on and worry about when it comes to your newborn so try not to add that of complexion to it. It's not worth it...
Let me not also forget to add that, because they're babies and still very much tender, everything about them is tender including their immune which means the skin is still too weak to protect itself.
Many children organ failure & problems in Nigeria have been linked to use of harmful and harsh skincare products.
Don't sacrifice your baby's health under the altar of fair skin. If you're a mother here who's still using or considering the Shea butter and tube cream mix, PLEASE STOP.
When it comes to your baby, please aim for healthy skin above everything else.
It's Children's month and starting today till the rest of May, I'll be teaching about kids hair and skincare
Keep a date with me, learn, make changes where needed and share for other mothers to learn too.

🔔 May Is Here 🔔
If you haven't changed your sponge since the beginning of the year, it's due for a change.
Also remember to sterilize it weekly from now with hot water and disinfectant and please take your sponge out for sun or at least breeze to touch it
Don't leave it in the bathroom always. It's sponge, the name is not Apunanwu. It's not allergic to sun.
If you're still using the same toothbrush since we started this year, ngwanu e don do. Throw it out and buy a new one today.
For your hair this month, pick one thing. JUST ONE
One thing you'll do and be really very consistent with throughout this month of May.
● It could be washing your hair more. That once in 2 months is not good enough.
● It could be making sure you condition your hair after washing it. Don't wash without conditioning.
● It could be never combing your hair when dry.
● It could be simple scalp massages daily.
● It could be cleaning your scalp every weekend if you made a hair you'll carry for like 2 months.
● It could be eating the fruits in season and more vegetables instead of always drinking coke.
● It could be making sure your hair is always very moisturized and never dry. Try to catch your hair by surprise. Moisturize a day before it feels dry.
● It could be adding herbs to your haircare routine. Use as final rinse or spray weekly or as a hair mask.
Believe me, one is enough.
Happy new month my people. Happy workers' day.
Ka Onwa May mara anyi niile mma. AMEN.

I've come such a long way.
Regrowing my hair is such a miracle. This too can be your story. Your hair can turn around for good.

Washday Sunday.
Made a detangler with Ambunu to detangle my hair as I've not washed my hair in a while...
Made a herbal tea I'll use when washing my hair.
Detangled one half of my hair.
Filmed a video on mixing an ayurvedic hair mask using our Flourish Super thickness hair masque and Scalp Pro Health.
Weather starts to change which made me worried as my prepaid meter is still open outside plus our Light was very much still connected which means rain should shouldn't be touching the meter.
I say a prayer for God to help us with this rain and started calling the numbers of NEPA officials I had, back and forth, from calls to WhatsApp...
We reach an agreement...
I get back to my hair and detangle the second half.
Now, I'm too tired to go through with washing my hair. Wo, we go another day.
Fine Sista, natural hair does not have undergrowth. If it feels like your hair has undergrowth, it's because you're not conditioning your hair enough or properly. FIX THAT and it'll be better simple.

You should pay attention to this whenever you're relaxing your hair to reduce damage to your hair.
I feel like enough has been said about relaxers not being healthy for your hair and your overall health but no one is talking much about this...
Because the honest truth is no matter how much we talk about it from now till tomorrow, there are people who will continue to relax their hair
● So it's very important that you at least do it right if you're going to keep using relaxers.
Here are a couple of questions I want you to ask yourself and answer honestly?
1). How often do you relax your hair? Every month, every 2 months. Do you have a schedule to it or you just relax your hair as the spirit leads.
● If you're relaxing your hair more than 3 times a year, you're not on the right path. You need to stop.
If you relax your hair everytime you make a new hairstyle so that the hair will shine well, Stop too.
2). Have you ever checked the time on the packet of your relaxer and followed through with it?
Or you just apply relaxer and leave it there on your hair like it's a hair cream in the name of Isi m Eyebe (it hasn't done) when it's not beans you're cooking?
● You carry it for as long as 1 hour. You even apply it and go about doing chores and running errands. The other day, I saw a lady in a bike with the relaxer she applied on her hair.
3). Do you protect your scalp when you relax your hair or does relaxer touch your scalp generously?
● Relaxer is a very harsh chemical and you must never forget that YOUR SCALP IS SKIN TOO.
Always apply Vaseline or Shea butter on your scalp to protect it whenever you're applying relaxer.
4). Are you relaxing just your undergrowth when you relax your hair or do you apply the relaxer all over your hair, including your front hair and back?
● I know it might be shocking but the only part of your hair you need to relax is the undergrowth. Not your entire hair and especially not your front hair or the nape hair (the small small hair at the back)
The way you let saloon people apply relaxer to all your front hair and just cover it up as if it's gel is so very wrong and part of the reason why your front hair is cutting and entering inside.
Finally, are you using too much relaxer?
You know yourself, you pack so much relaxer on your hair whenever you're relaxing your hair.
You'll first apply it, let it stay, apply some more and still apply more when you're combing it.
● Please stop. You're over relaxing and damaging your hair in the long run.
Which of these are you guilty of?
In the next post in this series, we'll look at the health implications of using relaxer.
