EUROPE IS NOT FOR THE AFRICAN MAN

I still remember the day I left home. The sky over Enugu was heavy, like it knew something I didn’t. At the airport, my family stood there smiling, but their eyes told a different story. Hope and fear mixed together. I carried a small bag, but inside me, I carried a mountain of expectations.

Europe… the promised land.

I told myself, “Just a few years of hustle, and everything will be alright.” I believed it. Many of us do.

The journey began Ethiopian Airlines, from Enugu to France. That first step felt like stepping into destiny. From France, I moved to Portugal. I was full of energy, ready to work, ready to prove myself. But reality came faster than I expected.

Months passed.

No job.

No stability.

Just endless walking, asking, hoping… and hearing “No” in different accents.

I told myself, “Maybe it’s just Portugal.” So I moved again. Spain. Then the Netherlands. Then Germany. Then back to Spain. Always moving. Always searching.

But the truth followed me everywhere.

Europe is not as easy as we were told.

The struggle here is silent. Nobody claps for you. Nobody even sees you.

You wake up early, not because you want to but because survival demands it. Rent is waiting. Bills are waiting. Food is not free. Transport is not free. Everything is counting against you.

Back home in Africa, even if you had nothing, you were not alone. There was always someone. A brother. A neighbor. A friend. You could sit outside in the evening, laugh, share stories, feel alive.

Here… silence.

You can live in a building full of people and still feel like you don’t exist.

Loneliness becomes your closest companion.

Then comes the language barrier. You want to speak, to express yourself, to defend yourself—but words fail you. You feel like a child again, trapped in a grown man’s body. Sometimes people laugh. Sometimes they ignore you. Sometimes they pretend not to understand, even when they do.

And then… racism.

It doesn’t always shout. Sometimes it whispers. Sometimes it hides behind a smile. But you feel it. In the way people look at you. In the way opportunities pass you by. In the way you are treated like you have to prove your humanity before anything else.

Even when you finally get papers… even when you get a European passport… something still doesn’t change.

You are still “the African man.”

You work the hardest jobs. Jobs that break your back. Jobs that drain your strength. Construction. Cleaning. Factory work. Long hours. Little rest. You tell yourself, “It’s just for now.”

But “for now” turns into years.

By the time stability begins to show… your body is tired. Your energy is not the same. The youth you brought from Africa has been spent paying bills, carrying loads, surviving.

Sometimes, at night, you ask yourself quietly:

“Was it worth it?”

But then you think of home. You think of your family. You think of why you left. And you keep going.

Because stopping is not an option.

Still, this is not the full story.

Because for some, Europe works.

Some find opportunities. Some build businesses. Some break through the system and create a better life. Some adapt, grow, and succeed beyond imagination.

So no, it is not a general conclusion.

But for many African men, the road here is not what we dreamed.

It is a road of sacrifice. Of hidden tears. Of strength nobody celebrates.

Europe is not for the weak.

And sometimes… it feels like Europe is not for the African man.

Yet, we are here.

Still standing.

Still fighting.

Still believing that one day, all this struggle will make sense.

A realife story of my friend....just enjoy the story and learn from it
