Star anise — a tiny star-shaped spice that brings life to oriental blends, khumrah and rich incense mixes. Typically, it has a sweet, spicy, slightly licorice-like scent with a cool aromatic edge, and that is what instantly adds character to a fragrance.

Think warm spice… but sharper and more sparkling than cinnamon or clove.

I often use Star Anise to create fresh spicy openings in Tathir, oriental / Middle Eastern warmth in Halut, gourmand sweetness in Vanilla Oud and masculine aromatic depth in Luxe Oud.

A tiny amount can brighten a heavy accord, add sophistication, add life to a blend and give a fragrance a memorable twist.

Too much though? It becomes too sharp and medicinal. Balance and restraint are the key words.

One strength of my supplier is consistency — and occasionally, very interesting surprises.

Recently, a client requested red jawii, and I realized I needed additional stock to complete the order. I placed a quick restock request, and the shipment arrived promptly.

Along with the red jawii, I received a sample of yellow jawii.

Ambergris is known to occur in different colour variations depending on aging, oxidation, and environmental exposure. While I’ve only previously encountered yellow variants in reference images, this is the first time I’ve physically handled one.

The scent profile shares similarities with red jawii — specifically the familiar depth, marine-earthy base, and natural richness associated with quality ambergris.

However, this sample presents a slightly brighter nuance — a subtle citrus-leaning note on first impression 🤔

I will share a detailed performance review once I've tested it in Shaa Allah.

Imagine this blend... Sandalwood powder, Dufr powder, Cloves, Musk powder, Amber, Oud, Rose.
And in the middle of all that complexity — Frankincense.

It's an aromatic resin that brings everything together. It binds, it smoothes, it balances. Allowing each note to sit properly without clashing.

Frankincense is one of the oldest foundational materials in perfumery, deeply rooted in ancient Middle Eastern and African scent cultures.

Obtained from trees in the Boswellia sacra genus and harvested from the trunk, then dried into aromatic “tears.” When burned, it produces a slow, clean smoke that is widely used in traditional incense systems.

On its own, Frankincense burns steadily, producing a refined controlled minimal smoke.
When mixed with other aromatic woods, it helps bind and balance ingredients, supporting depth in complex blends.

Across many cultures, it has also been traditionally associated with cleansing spaces, purification practices and creating a calm atmosphere.

When used in a rich composition like sandalwood, musk, amber, oud, and rose, frankincense acts as the bridge — connecting everything seamlessly.
