Are we losing our cultural heritage or are we standing out in a society where culture is seen as barbaric and outdated? 🤔🤔
It hits hard that even as a language teacher, you find about 90-99 percent of students that are fluent in English language but looking deeper we realize that 80 - 90 percent of these kids cannot speak their language. The one that pains me the most are the Igbo kids who live in predominantly Igbo speaking states. A child that is born and raised in Enugu cannot even make a complete statement by speaking central Igbo not to talk about the various dialect in Igbo language.
Yoruba professors' can speak Yoruba, their children also speak Yoruba especially in public gatherings. You rarely hear Yoruba's talking to themselves in English. But what about our Igbo people, someone will boldly tell you "my child cannot speak Igbo" and that person will be very proud to say this to another person.
Chai! Secondary school students cannot tell you where they're from, the name of their local government or even the name of their village. Many don't even visit their village and we are thinking that speaking our language will degrade our status. Ndi ala yi akwa.
Better teach your kids how to speak their language and stop stressing language teachers!!📣📣♥️♥️
