Something very bad just happened in my area and it really broke my heart. π Honestly, nobody deserves what happened, especially not an elderly man.
I donβt know exactly what transpired between a young lady and a taxi driver at first, but from the way everyone was begging the man and blaming the lady, it was obvious she was at fault. Later, I stayed in front of my house and listened to some market women discussing what really happened, and this is the story. π
My fatherβs house is very close to the market, so every day especially during Ramadan a lot of traders come here very early to buy goods they will later sell. When theyβre ready to go back home, they usually board Maruwa (keke/Napep) or taxis right in front of our house. In fact, if you come to my area in the morning, you might barely find space to walk because everywhere is filled with fruits and goods from traders. π
So this morning, a young lady (probably around 23β25 years old) who had also come to buy goods stopped a taxi. The driver, an elderly man who looked about 60β70 years old, came down so they could negotiate the price, which is the normal routine here. He told her the price based on her destination and the amount of goods she had.
Before she even agreed to the price, the man explained that he would first drop something at a nearby location. He said it might take a little time because the personβs goods were many and he would have to wait for them to offload. The lady agreed, so the man started putting her goods inside the car.
According to what people said, while this was happening the man saw another passenger who was also going to the same destination as the lady, so he picked the person too. Immediately, the lady became furious and complained that the driver was wasting her time. She got down from the taxi and started arguing with him.
The driver tried to explain that it was a taxi and that vehicles like that usually wait until they have enough passengers before moving. Meanwhile, he was still helping to load another womanβs goods into the boot.
They continued exchanging words, and suddenly the lady walked up to this elderly man, looked him straight in the eye, and gave him a very loud slap. π³
Before the man could even process what had happened, people had already gathered around them. Many people were begging the old man while the market women were raining insults and curses on the lady. The old man started crying like a child. π₯Ή
While crying, he said, βIf not for poverty, should I still be doing this kind of work at my age?β
What that lady did really broke him. He even started questioning God while crying so hard. It was painful to watch. Why would anyone treat an old man like that when he did nothing wrong?
And the most shocking part was the ladyβs response. She said and I quote that βit wasnβt intentional, she just has anger issues.β But she said it with pride, while still insulting people who were calling her out.
Eventually, the old man entered his taxi and said he did not forgive her and would never forget what she did. The lady didnβt even show any sign of remorse. π€¦ββοΈ
Honestly, what happened today was heartbreaking. No matter how angry someone is, raising your hand to slap an elderly man who is only trying to survive is just wrong. Some people really need to learn empathy and self-control. π
