Hello beautiful people 🥰
Trust we are doing great and coping well this harmattan season.
I thought to share some homemade herbal honey recipes that has helped my family in combating this harsh, cold and dusty season by preventing or in some cases treat some respiratory ailments that come with the season:
HONEY + ONION: in a clean, dry glass container, add some grated onions (preferably white onions) to honey and leave for 5 to 7 days in a cool dark place (avoid sunlight). After this you and your family can take a spoonful of this first thing in the morning after drinking some water on empty stomach to prevent all respiratory ailments.
Interestingly, it minimizes asthma crisis and clears it on a long run if used judiciously.
HONEY + GINGER POWDER + GARLIC POWDER: same process as above but can be taken immediately by either licking or mixed in slightly hot clean water and taken as tea on empty stomach. It can also be taken with pap. Children love this combo😋. It should be in ratios 3:1:1 table spoonfuls (honey:ginger powder: garlic powder) in a clean glass container.
HONEY + LEMON OR LIME JUICE: squeeze out some amount of juice and add into honey in a glass container. Stir thoroughly and take a spoonful morning and night before bedtime. Ulcer patients should please avoid this recipe.
HONEY + LEMONGRASS: brew some lemongrass leaves in clean boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes, leave to cool down a bit, add some honey and drink as tea. This is so refreshing, calming and energizing. Acts as detox and will greatly boost your immunity.
HONEY + ZOBO: you can either blend ZOBO petals (the normal zobo in the market) into powder and mix with your honey just as recipe 1 or boil zobo petals in water, leave to cool a bit, strain and add some honey. Drink up before it gets cold. (Optional: you can add some fruits and ginger to the boiling zobo but no refined sugar at all).
HONEY + TURMERIC: perfect antibiotic recipe. Add some turmeric powder and honey in a glass container, mix thoroughly until well combined. Leave mixture for a day before taking a spoonful once a day for 3 days. After which you desist from taking it for another 1 week to avoid blood thinning; that's how powerful it is. You can continue use after the 1 week break😊
HONEY + CINNAMON: method and use is just as mentioned in the recipe above. Can also be licked or taken as tea. Fights respiratory infections effectively.
HONEY + MINT LEAVES: dry some mint leaves and blend to powder. Add some powdered mint leaves into honey in a glass container and leave to settle for 1 day after which it can be licked or mixed in warm water for drinking.
BEESWAX: this is the best time to light up your houses with Beeswax candles as they work effectively in prevention and treatment of respiratory issues by inhaling the smoke and scent of the candles when lighted.
I will stop here for now but please note that MODERATION IS KEY in the effective use of herbal recipes. Please use in moderation not excessively 🙏.
A few more tips:
*Keep you and your family most especially children warm in this season
*Limit opening windows in dusty areas
*Use clean nose covers/masks when outdoors; the dust is much and shouldn't be inhaled
I can't say this enough so I will keep saying it *' please stay hydrated by drinking lots of water in this season, it will help and save you and your family a lot
*Eat lots of clean and washed fruits; they contain lots of antioxidants that can help you fight against respiratory infections causing illnesses
*Wash your hands regularly please
I will keep posting as I remember other recipes.
Thanks and God bless you as you remain in sound health 🙏

Let me quickly drop some important tips on how to properly store your organic and adulterated honey to maintain its freshness and quality:
1. Keep it Sealed: ensure the container is tightly sealed after each use to prevent air from entering, which can lead to moisture absorption leaving your honey watery.
2. Store in a Cool and Dry Place: keep the honey in a cool, dry, and dark place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. A kitchen cabinet works well for this purpose.
3. Avoid Refrigeration: low temperatures as a result of refrigeration can cause honey to crystallize more quickly. It's best to store honey at room temperature.
4. Use a Dry Spoon or honey scoop: when scooping honey out of the jar or container, use a clean and dry spoon or scoop to prevent any water or moisture from getting into the container.
5. Check for Crystallization: if your honey crystallizes over time, don't worry; it's a natural process. To liquefy it again, gently warm the jar or container in a warm water bath, never boiling or microwaving the honey, it denatures the nutrients of your honey.
6. Protect from Contaminants: keep honey away from potential contaminants, such as dust, dirt, chemicals or food particles, as they can degrade its quality.
7. Store in Glass or Food-Grade Plastic: glass jars or food-grade plastic containers are suitable for storing honey, as they won't react with the honey and maintain its flavor and quality.
By following these few storage tips, you can enjoy the full flavor and natural goodness of your organic honey for a long period.

Let's learn✌️
HONEY VS PROPOLIS
Honey is a sweet, viscous substance made from nectar collected by bees from flowers. Bees process the nectar, adding enzymes and reducing its water content until it becomes honey. Honey is a source of natural sugars, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It is used as a natural sweetener and as a remedy for sore throats, coughs, and other respiratory problems. Honey also has antibacterial properties that can help fight infections.
Propolis, on the other hand, is a sticky substance made by bees from tree sap, beeswax, and other plant materials. Bees use propolis to seal gaps in their hives and protect their colony from bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. Propolis has antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties, and it is used in traditional medicine for wound healing, immune system support, and other health benefits.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND CRYSTALLIZED HONEY (the surprising crystals in Honey)
Bees work hard to make honey a stable liquid, but sometimes it crystallizes into a solid in our kitchen cabinets. Here’s why👇
Honey is one of the great delights of the natural world: an ingenious food storage system for bees and an occasional treat for bears, humans and any other animals with a sweet tooth and a resistance to bee stings. Honey is normally a liquid at room temperature, and any child or advertising campaign will emphasize that feature—honey is runny but when a recipe required me to retrieve a jar from the back of my cupboard this week, I found that the honey had crystallized and was mostly solid. It wasn’t old or spoilt, just solid but did that matter?🤷🏼♀️
The honey we eat starts off as nectar made by flowering plants as a sugary treat to attract bees for pollination. The exact composition depends on which plants the nectar came from, but the type of sugar in it is almost all sucrose, a compound made by pairing one glucose molecule and one fructose molecule.
The bees need to store some of their sugary bounty in the hive, so they process it to make it more suitable for storage. They remove water from it by an elaborate mechanism and split the sucrose into its component parts, ending up with a mixture of around 38% fructose, 32% glucose and 17% water, depending on the source of the nectar, with other molecules making up the rest. At that ratio, there’s too little water it in for microbes to grow but enough that it’s viscous and easily sealed into honeycomb compartments.
Each crystal just needs a starting point, such as a grain of pollen or a speck of beeswax.
So where do these mystery crystals come from?👇
In a typical honey, so much glucose is dissolved in the solution that it becomes supersaturated, spurring glucose molecules to separate from the liquid and form crystals given the slightest chance. (the fructose is easier to keep in dissolved form.) Each crystal just needs a starting point, such as a grain of pollen or a speck of beeswax.
Though commercial honey is filtered to remove these tiny intruders, if left for long enough some of the glucose molecules will find something, even air bubbles, to act as a foundation.
Types of honey with higher ratios of glucose are more likely to form crystals. The temperature also matters: below 39 degrees Fahrenheit, the glucose molecules have relatively little energy and can’t move around easily; at 77 degrees and above, it becomes easier for the molecules to remain in solution. But crystals can form between those temperatures, most easily around in the middle at roughly 60 degrees (so don’t store your honey in the garage). At first, the crystals tend to sink, leaving you with honey that’s solid at the bottom of the jar and liquid at the top.
After many months, crystallization may continue and spread through the jar, or enough glucose may have solidified into crystals to form a balance in the rest of the honey. Meanwhile, the rest of the honey now has a higher proportion of water: Each dissolved glucose molecule is surrounded by a cluster of five water molecules, but when it becomes part of a crystal, it gives up four of its molecular groupies, leaving more water free. If that process carries on and the honey is also left uncapped and exposed to air so it can absorb even more water, the liquid honey may become dilute enough for specialized yeasts in the honey to start to grow and cause spoilage. That’s exactly what the bees worked to avoid.
Fortunately, there’s an easy way to get rid of the crystals and restore balance: for instance, you can immerse the jar or container of crystallized honey in hot water (around 120 degrees) for a few minutes, and the solid glucose crystals will redissolve, taking the honey back to its original state. It’s very safe and tastes the same. I personally don’t mind the crystals, infact, I love them❤️ because they’re a reminder of the molecular secrets that honey hides inside itself.
