đ MYTHS VS FACTS ABOUT BREAST CANCER đ¸ (a few will shock you! âşď¸)
đ MYTH 1: Only women with a family history get breast cancer
FACT: Most women diagnosed have no family history.
While genetics (like BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations) can increase risk, lifestyle, environment, and age also play major roles.
đ MYTH 2: Only older women get breast cancer
FACT: Risk increases with age, but younger women (and even men) can get it too.
Thatâs why self-checks and awareness are important for everyone.
đ MYTH 3: Finding a lump always means cancer
FACT: Not all breast lumps are cancerous.
Many are benign cysts or fibroadenomas, but every new lump should still be checked by a doctor.
đ MYTH 4: Breast cancer always causes pain
FACT: Early-stage breast cancer often doesnât hurt.
Thatâs why waiting for pain before seeing a doctor is risky â early detection matters.
đ MYTH 5: Wearing a bra (especially underwire) causes breast cancer
FACT: Thereâs no scientific evidence linking bras or underwires to breast cancer.
The idea came from a rumour about lymph flow â but studies have disproved it.
đ MYTH 6: Only women can get breast cancer
FACT: Men have breast tissue too â though rare, they can also develop breast cancer.
Men should also report lumps or ni**le changes to doctors.
đ MYTH 7: Mammograms cause cancer or are unsafe
FACT: The radiation from a mammogram is very small and safe.
The benefits of early detection far outweigh any minimal radiation risk.
đ MYTH 8: If you eat healthy and exercise, you canât get breast cancer
FACT: A healthy lifestyle reduces risk but doesnât eliminate it.
Some factors (like genetics and hormones) are beyond your control.
đ MYTH 9: Breast cancer means youâll lose your breast
FACT: Not always.
Modern treatments like lumpectomy (removing just the tumour) can preserve much of the breast. Reconstruction is also possible after mastectomy.
đ MYTH 10: Treatment always causes extreme sickness and hair loss
FACT: Side effects vary by person and treatment type.
Newer therapies often have fewer or milder side effects, and supportive care helps patients manage them better.

Things to look out for during examination.
When & how often?
⢠Ideally, pick a consistent time each month â for example, a few days after your period ends, when your breasts are less likely to be swollen or tender. ďżź
⢠If you donât have regular periods, choose one fixed day each month.
⢠BSE is not a substitute for professional screening (like a mammogram) â itâs a tool for knowing your normal and spotting changes early.

Hereâs a clear, step-by-step guide to performing a breast self-examination (BSE), along with an infographic style image to help you visualise each stage. Itâs simple, effective, and helps you become familiar with your own body so youâll notice changes quickly.
