AFRICAN TRADITIONAL MEDICINE (ATM) DAY.

Phytohealth Global Ventures (PGV) is exceedingly glad to join ATM practitioners from different parts of Africa in the celebration of this year's African Traditional Medicine Day organized by the Department of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicines (TCAM), Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH), Nigeria.

In line with the Theme:
Two Decades of African Traditional Medicine Day: Progress Towards Achieving Universal Health Coverage in Africa; this is the time to harness the free gifts of nature embodied in African Traditional Medicine to tackle challenging health issues in Africa and the world at large.

Africa is blessed with rich and efficacious medicinal plants for management of almost all human cases but unfortunately, our excessive reliance on conventional drugs and imported herbal medicines has actually limited our progress in achieving universal health coverage. Nigerian government should invest quality resources on training and retraining of traditional, complementary and alternative medicine practitioners to build a sustainable human capacity needed to promote health and wellness in Nigeria and Africa. There is urgent need to revisit and if possible reopen the Federal College of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (FEDCAM) which was closed by National University Commission (NUC) in September 2010. The sudden and unfortunate closure of FEDCAM affected the growth of traditional, complementary and alternative medicine advancement in Nigeria; it directly and indirectly blurred the bright vision of talented Nigerian scholars who keyed into the broad vision of FEDCAM as a training ground for future practitioners of TCAM in Nigeria and Africa. Some of these students invested their resources and time in training but suddenly the noble institution was shut down unnoticed, putting the career and future of the diligent students at stake. Besides, there was no compensation or any tangible arrangement by the government to consider a way forward for the students who devoted their time and money to feel the gap in TCAM practice and advancement in Nigeria. Unfortunately, many of the students were forced to lose interest and pursue their career in other fields at different institutions across the globe after many years of unrewarded waiting.

Meanwhile, the establishment of TCAM department in the Federal Ministry of Health and inauguration of the Expert Committee on TCAM has reawakened the hope of young Nigerian youth who are talented and willing to bring disruptive innovations in the research, formulation, production, packaging and administration of traditional, complementary and alternative medicines in line with the guildlines of World Health Organization (WHO).

We have all it takes to succeed in our health sector, but lack of mutual coexistence and collaboration between the conventional health system and the TCAM has rendered our overall health sector incapacitated especially when faced with some challenging cases such as Covid-19. This is the right time to come back home and think of the possible ways to improve and strengthen our health systems through legal introduction of TCAM into the mainstream medicine, and comfortably use their standardized products for treatment of diseases the same way it is done in China and India. However, to increase enlightenment is to increase prosperity; there is urgent need for training and retraining of TCAM practitioners to create room for continuity of African Traditional Medicine (ATM) which is now on a fast lane of extinction if nothing is done urgently. The department of TCAM and their reputable expert committee members should channel great efforts on succession plans to create room for a steady state availability of trained and skilled TCAM practitioners who can match and compete with other practitioners from the developed countries in terms of modernized traditional medicine practice. Some good brains are still available to make great impacts in TCAM advancement in Nigeria, if the government and the key stakeholders will create an enabling environment for both learning and transfer of knowledge. Congratulations to all our past and present heroes in the field of TCAM; your efforts will not be in vain. Happy ATM Day!

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE!

WHAT IS YOUR ALTITUDE TO HEALTHY FOODS?

"Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food". ~ Hippocrates (400BC).

Modern day research sheds light on just why food is the best medicine. Studies show that poor dietary choices are the cause of chronic inflammation, which is the primary driver of disease. Food is medicine when it provides a significant positive impact to our body systems as a whole.
