I have stayed quiet about this for a long time because speaking publicly about followers and reach can easily sound emotional or unprofessional, but at this point, it is becoming difficult to ignore. Unfollows are normal and completely understandable. People change interests, follow pages temporarily, follow by mistake or simply move on from certain content over time. That is not the issue. What I am referring to is the consistent removal of real followers, customers and community members from our page over the past few years.
I first started noticing this in 2023, and since then, it has continued repeatedly. We entered early 2024 at 41.1K followers and got very close to 41.2K before the account gradually started declining despite remaining active, creating content consistently, running ads and continuing to grow our customer base offline and online. Over time, the page dropped from 41K to 40.9K, then 40.8K, 40.7K, 40.6K and 40.5K, where it remained for a long time then went to 40.2 and we built it back to 40.5. Yesterday, the page dropped again to 40.1K and today we woke up to 40K.
We fully support the removal of fake accounts if necessary. The concern is that real customers and genuine supporters are also being affected. We constantly receive messages from people asking why they are no longer following our page despite following previously. Some even assume we removed them personally. This has happened so often that it is no longer something we can dismiss lightly.
What makes this especially frustrating is that small businesses already work extremely hard to remain visible online. We spend heavily on ads, invest time into creating educational content, build products and consistently show up for our audience despite the challenges that already come with doing business in Nigeria. Visibility for small brands is not just about numbers or vanity metrics. It directly affects reach, engagement, customer retention/ultimately sales.
