THE EXCITING WORLD OF THE HONEYBEE

A honey bee (or honeybee) is any member of the genus Apis, primarily distinguished by the production and storage of honey and the construction of perennial, colonial nests from wax. Currently, only seven species of honey bee are recognized, with a total of 44 subspecies, though historically six to eleven species are recognized. The best known honey bee is the Western honey bee which has been domesticated for honey production and crop pollination.

Honey Bees and Their Wondrous Products

• Bee Pollen
Bee pollen is not the same as allergy-causing pollen that is carried by the wind. It rarely causes allergy symptoms. It is actually the male seed of a flower blossom which are collected by the honey bees and mixed with the bees' digestive enzymes. Bee pollen is low in calories but rich in proteins, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, beneficial fatty acids, carbohydrates, and bioflavonoids which are anti-viral, antibacterial and helpful in lowering cholesterol, stabilising and strengthening capillaries. Its ability to rejuvenate the body, stimulates organs, enhances vitality and accelerate rate of recovery makes it a popular tonic among athletes and sportsmen.

Beewax
• Bee wax or beeswax is a natural secretion from wax glands on the sides of the body of honey bees and is used primarily as a building block for the bees' honeycomb cells in which the young are raised and honey and pollen are stored. To stimulate the production of beeswax, the honey bees feed themselves with honey and huddle together to raise the temperature of the cluster. The uses of beeswax are found in numerous products, including skin care products, candles, furniture polish, batik-making,etc.

• Propolis
• Honey bees collect sticky resins that ooze from the buds of some trees and conifers. After chewing them and mixing them with their saliva and other substances, Propolis or sometimes called "sticky glue" is formed. Propolis is of vital importance for the survival of the honey bees in the beehive. Not only does it protect them against diseases, it also helps fight against climatic changes, such as wind and cold. Because of its antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, Propolis has been shown to have outstanding value for a wide variety of illnesses. It is also used as ointments for healing cuts and wounds.

Honey
• Honey has been used by countless cultures all around the world over the past 2,500 years. While the numerous health benefits of honey have made it an important element of traditional medicines. Scientists are also researching the benefits in relation to modern medicine, particularly in the healing of wounds.
• Honey is a sweet, viscous food substance produced by bees and some related insects. Bees produce honey from the sugary secretions of plants (floral nectar) through regurgitation, enzymatic activity, and water evaporation, and store it in wax structures called honeycombs. The variety of honey produced by honey bees (the genus Apis) is the best-known, due to its worldwide commercial production and human consumption.
• Honey is collected from wild bee colonies, or from hivesof domesticated bees, a practice known as beekeeping.

• Bee Bread
• What an interesting name, right? Bee bread is actually the main source of food for most larvae and bees. It is fed to all larvae except those that are selected to become queens; the queen larvae are fed royal jelly instead. Comprised of all essential amino acids, high contents of vitamins especially vitamin K, enzymes, and flavanoids, bee bread is made of pollen mixed with bits of honey, bee wax, and bees' digestive enzymes and is known to be useful in treating anemia, hepatitis, insomnia, stress, failing memory, cholesterol and disgestive tract disorder. Nowadays, it is rare to find bee bread.

Royal Jelly
• Royal jelly is a milky secretion produced by worker honey bees. It typically contains about 60% to 70% water, 12% to 15% proteins, 10% to 16% sugar, 3% to 6% fats, and 2% to 3% vitamins, salts, and amino acids. Its composition varies depending on geography and climate. This product gets its name from the fact that bees use it for the development and nurturing of queen bees. Some people use royal jelly as medicine. Don’t confuse royal jelly with bee pollen or bee venom.
Royal jelly is used for asthma, hay fever, liver disease, pancreatitis, sleep troubles (insomnia), premenstrual syndrome (PMS), stomach ulcers, kidney disease, bone fractures, menopausal symptoms, skin disorders, and high cholesterol. It is also used as a general health tonic, for fighting the effects of aging, and for boosting the immune system.

Swissgarde’s Royal Jelly
• Royal jelly is the queen bee's extraordinary source of food. It is a blend of secretions from the salivary glands of the worker bee and contains a high concentration of vitamins B5, B6, and amino acids and is believed to be a potent antioxidant a special rejuvenating substance that promotes tissue growth, muscle and cell regeneration.

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS)- WHEN YOUR STOMACH SINGS A DIFFERENT TUNE

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the large intestine (colon). The symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (also called 'spastic colon') can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. Irritable bowel syndrome commonly causes cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation. IBS is a chronic condition that you will need to manage long term.

CAUSES

The walls of the intestines are lined with layers of muscle that contract and relax in a coordinated rhythm as they move food from your stomach through your intestinal tract to your re**um. If you have irritable bowel syndrome, the contractions may be stronger and last longer than normal, causing gas, bloating and diarrhea. Or the opposite may occur, with weak intestinal contractions slowing food passage and leading to hard, dry stools.

Abnormalities in your gastrointestinal nervous system also may play a role, causing you to experience greater than normal discomfort when your abdomen stretches from gas or stool. Poorly coordinated signals between the brain and the intestines can make your body overreact to the changes that normally occur in the digestive process. This overreaction can cause pain, diarrhea or constipation.

Triggers vary from person to person
Stimuli that don't bother other people can trigger symptoms in people with IBS — but not all people with the condition react to the same stimuli. Common triggers include:
• Foods. The role of food allergy or intolerance in irritable bowel syndrome is not yet clearly understood, but many people have more severe symptoms when they eat certain things. A wide range of foods has been implicated — chocolate, spices, fats, fruits, beans, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, milk, carbonated beverages and alcohol to name a few.
• Stress. Most people with IBS find that their signs and symptoms are worse or more frequent during periods of increased stress, such as finals week or the first weeks on a new job. But while stress may aggravate symptoms, it doesn't cause them.
• Hormones. Because women are twice as likely to have IBS, researchers believe that hormonal changes play a role in this condition. Many women find that signs and symptoms are worse during or around their menstrual periods.
Other illnesses. Sometimes another illness, such as an acute episode of infectious diarrhea (gastroenteritis) or too many bacteria in the intestines (bacterial overgrowth), can trigger IBS.

NATURAL REMEDY FOR IBS

Manage your stress

Since stress is one of the factors known to trigger an IBS flare-up, learn to short-circuit it with meditation, or a simple breathing exercise like this one. Sit comfortably, or lie down. Turn your attention to the air going in and out of your body. When upsetting or anxiety-producing thoughts intrude, focus completely on your breathing. Practice this daily. Then, whenever you feel yourself becoming tense and anxious, use it to calm yourself. ( You can refer to my earlier article on stress management).
Go easy on your intestines

Minimize fried foods, meats, oils, margarine, dairy foods, and other fatty foods. They cause your colon to contract violently, which can lead to diarrhea and abdominal pain.
Stay away from spicy foods. The capsaicin in hot peppers, for example, makes your large intestine go into spasms, which can cause diarrhea.
Cut down on caffeine. It can worsen IBS by irritating your intestines.
Avoid foods known to cause flatulence, including cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli.
Don’t chew gum or candy that contains artificial sweeteners. Among the common sweeteners in these products are sorbitol and mannitol, which can have a laxative effect. They’re very difficult to digest. When bacteria in your colon eventually break down these ‘nonabsorbed sugars,’ you get gas and diarrhea.
Stop smoking. Ni****ne contributes to IBS flare-ups. Also, when you smoke, you swallow air, and people with IBS are very sensitive to having air in their gut.

Fit in more fibre
Soluble fibre soaks up liquid in your intestines, helping to prevent diarrhea. Good sources are beans, oatmeal, and some fruits, such as apples, strawberries and grapefruit.
If you can’t seem to get enough soluble fibre in your diet, take a daily supplement like Swissgarde’s super cider that guarantees enough fibre in the bowell.
If constipation is your main complaint, fill up on insoluble fibre, found in whole wheat, bran, other whole grains, salad greens, and other foods. Insoluble fiber bulks up stool, which speeds its passage through the intestines.
Drink peppermint tea

Every day, drink a cup or two of peppermint tea, which relaxes your intestines, reduces spasms, and relieves gas pain. From Swissgarde family comes Marina Spa, which contains menthol from its peppermint constituent, will be of immense help
Drink ginger tea. Ginger soothes all manner of digestive problems, including IBS. Buchu power from Swissgarde contains ginger which is good for intestinal health

Graze, don’t gorge

Eat smaller meals more frequently rather than a couple of large meals each day. Taking in too much food at once can overstimulate your digestive system.
If you usually bolt down your meals, go more slowly and pay more attention to chewing your food. Fast eaters often swallow too much air, which turns into bothersome intestinal gas. Eat yogurt : Having diarrhea can drain away good bacteria that help prevent harmful bacteria from growing out of control. When you’re having IBS-related diarrhea, eat plenty of yogurt containing active bacteria, such as acidophilus.
In addition to the lifestyle changes mentioned above, Marina Spa, Buchu power, Super cider and Royal jelly which contributes in hormone regulation for the condition will help to take care of IBS. To order call 07068946185 or Whatsapp me

If you are a woman, D**G QUAI will interest you

D**g quai (Angelica sinensis) is an herb native to China, Japan, and Korea. A member of the celery family, it's long been used in traditional Chinese medicine. Since it's thought to have a balancing effect on the female hormonal system, d**g quai is sometimes referred to as "female ginseng."
D**g quai supplements typically contain extracts of the root of the plant. The root is rich in a number of substances thought to influence health, including compounds with anti-inflammatory and immune-stimulating effects.
D**g quai root also contains a substance called ferulic acid.

Uses for D**g Quai

D**g quai is said to aid in the treatment of the following health conditions: allergies, constipation, fibroids, headache, high blood pressure, menopausal symptoms, menstrual cramps, nasal and/or sinus congestion, osteoarthritis, premenstrual syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis.

The Benefits of D**g Quai

Hot Flashes
There's some evidence that taking d**g quai in combination with other herbs may help soothe hot flashes in women going through menopause.
Additionally, a small study published in Gynecological Endocrinology in 2007 found that an herbal formula containing d**g quai along with several other herbs (including black cohosh, milk thistle, red clover, American ginseng, and chaste tree berry) helped relieve hot flashes and sleep disturbance in pre- and post-menopausal women.

Arthritis
D**g quai shows promise in the treatment of osteoarthritis, according to a preliminary study published in PLoS One in 2014. In tests on cells taken from human cartilage (and in tests on rats), scientists observed that compounds extracted from d**g quai might inhibit osteoarthritis-related breakdown of cartilage.

D**g Quai and Breast Cancer
Some research indicates that d**g quai may be harmful to women with breast cancer or at high risk for the disease. In a study published in Menopause in 2005, for instance, tests on cells in culture demonstrated that d**g quai may promote the growth of breast cancer cells.

Where to Find It
D**g quai supplements are sold in many natural-foods stores and stores specializing in herbal products, as well as online, Swissgarde is a leading company in this regard and one of their Flagship product, 40 plus for women , contains this wonderful herbal extract.

What are Nutraceuticals?

Nutraceuticals is a broad umbrella term that is used to describe any product derived from food sources with extra health benefits in addition to the basic nutritional value found in foods. They can be considered non-specific biological therapies used to promote general well-being, control symptoms and prevent malignant processes.

The term “nutraceutical” combines two words – “nutrient” (a nourishing food component) and “pharmaceutical” (a medical drug). The name was coined in 1989 by Stephen DeFelice, founder and chairman of the Foundation for Innovation in Medicine, an American organization located in Cranford, New Jersey.

The philosophy behind nutraceuticals is to focus on prevention, according to the saying by a Greek physician Hippocrates (known as the father of medicine) who said “let food be your medicine”. Their role in human nutrition is one of the most important areas of investigation, with wide-raging implications for consumers, health-care providers, regulators, food producers and distributors.

Categories of nutraceuticals
The definition of nutraceuticals and related products generally depends on the source. They can be classified on the basis of their natural sources, pharmacological conditions, as well as chemical constitution of the products. Most often they are grouped in the following categories: dietary supplements, functional food, medicinal food, farmaceuticals.

A dietary supplement represents a product that contains nutrients derived from food products, and is often concentrated in liquid, capsule, powder or pill form. Although dietary supplements are regulated as foods, their regulation differs from drugs and other foods.

According to their generally accepted definition, functional food is a category which includes whole foods and fortified, enriched or enhanced dietary components that may reduce the risk of chronic disease and provide a health-benefit beyond the traditional nutrients it contains.

Potential health benefits
Over the years nutraceuticals have attracted considerable interest due to their potential nutritional, safety and therapeutic effects. They could have a role in a plethora of biological processes, including antioxidant defenses, cell proliferation, gene expression, and safeguarding of mitochondrial integrity.

Therefore nutraceuticals may be used to improve health, prevent chronic diseases, postpone the aging process (and in turn increase life expectancy), or just support functions and integrity of the body. They are considered to be healthy sources for prevention of life threatening diseases such as diabetes, renal and gastrointestinal disorders, as well as different infections.

A wide range of nutraceuticals have been shown to impose crucial roles in immune status and susceptibility to certain disease states. They also exhibit diseases modifying indications related to oxidative stress including allergy, Alzheimer's disease, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, eye conditions, Parkinson's diseases and obesity.

Swissgarde is one company with effective and potent nutraceuticals .

STOP FEEDING YOUR FIBROIDS

Many times many have asked what their meals should look like, when one has fibroids , and what food either helps fight it or arrest its growth. Also, what should your meal plan look like so that you don’t end up feeding the fibroid?
Medical researchers from all over the world have confirmed how humans develop different kinds of ailments through food consumption and also how changing diet can also be the solution. Today, we want to have a look at how diet can help women combat fibroids naturally as well as endometriosis.
Fibroids and endometriosis are conditions that affect many women in Nigeria today. Endometriosis occurs when uterine lining cells grow outside the uterus; fibroids are benign tumors that grow in the uterus. Both conditions can trigger pain and fertility problems.

MEAL PLAN FOR FIBROID

Foods Rich in Fiber

The daily recommended intake of fibre for women stands at 25g, although you need less as you get older — 21g if you are over the age of 51. This is critically important if you have fibroids or endometriosis. Boosting fibre intake to 30 g per day reduces the amount of oestrogen in your body, the hormone that triggers fibroid growth. Additionally, eating a high-fibre, plant-based diet may help protect you from endometriosis. Choose fruits and vegetables as well as whole grain foods such as pasta and bread to increase your fibre intake.

Fibre is an important part of a healthy diet and lifestyle. There are many Nigerian foods that are naturally high in fibre. You probably know about beans, lentils and nuts.
fruits and green-leafy vegetables are generally high-fibre foods. But which ones are really beneficial? Below is a list of surprisingly high-fibre foods that are hardly mentioned;

Pears: Pears have more fibre content in them when they are unpeeled. The skin contains all of the fibre and nutrients. One medium pear with the skin intact has about five grams of fibre in it.
Avocado: is actually a high-fibre fruit, but people normally use it as a vegetable. Two tablespoons of fresh avocado has about 2g of fibre in it. An entire avocado has 10 grams.
Chocolate: Dark chocolate has many health benefits, including being high in potassium and iron. Cocoa powder, mostly used for baking, is also a good source of health benefits. Cocoa powder has over 33grams of fibre per 100grams – that’s over 100 per cent of your recommended daily intake. Dark chocolate can have up to 17 grams of fibre per 100 grams, which is half of your daily intake requirement.
Please Note – Only cocoa powder and dark chocolate have enough nutrients to be consumed. White chocolate and milk chocolate are mostly sugar, and are bad for you. They should be consumed sparingly, since they have no health benefits whatsoever.

Cruciferous Vegetables

Add cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli or Brussels sprouts to your meals in order to avoid fibroids or stop further growth. Compounds that exist in these good-for-you vegetables fight changes in tissues in your body, which can prevent the formation of noncancerous growths, including fibroids.
Fatty Fish

Including fatty fish in your diet, the kind that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, may reduce your risk of endometriosis. A study published in the June 2010 issue of the journal “Human Reproductions” indicates that female study participants who consumed the most omega-3 fats demonstrated considerably less risk — 22 percent — of an endometriosis diagnosis than those who eat the lowest amount. If you have fibroids, you can benefit from eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids as well; these fats reduce the formation of scar formation and decrease inflammation associated with the condition. Wild (not farmed) salmon, tuna, mackerel, cod, trout, halibut, herring, and sardines are among the best sources.

Foods High in Lycopene

Supplement your meal plan with foods high in lycopene, a compound that provides certain fruits and vegetables — such as tomatoes, pink grapefruit and watermelon. Nutrition Research” suggests that a diet that includes lycopene may reduce risk of fibroid growth. Pretty much anything with tomatoes in it is rich in lycopene. That includes whole tomatoes, tomato-based soups, sauces and salsas, and also ketchup, baked beans, BBQ sauce and salad dressings derived from tomatoes. One cup of canned tomato sauce has 34 mg of lycopene.

FOODS TO AVOID

Saturated Fats

Foods high in saturated fats should not be consumed by fibroid patients. These fats can raise the estrogen level, which allows fibroids to grow larger. These foods are also hard on the liver, making it difficult for the body to break down and rid itself of the excess hormones. Avoid bacon, sausage, egg yolks and high-fat processed snacks such as cookies and pastries, which are loaded with saturated fats.

Red Meat

Red meat from mammals and duck are not recommended for those with fibroids. These foods are likely to be high in added hormones, including estrogen. Eat lean white meat for a protein source instead.

High-fat Dairy Products
Women with fibroid tumors are encouraged to limit consumption of high-fat dairy products such as whole milk, cream and butter. These products are often high in added hormones that can feed your tumors. Opt for organic hormone-free products for your dairy consumption

Caffeine Laden Beverages

Beverages containing caffeine are on the list of foods to avoid when you have fibroids on your uterus. William E. Richardson of the Atlanta Clinic of Preventative Medicine warns against drinking these beverages due to their high level of methylanthins which, in turn, cause a high level of biochemicals in the body that can form tumors. Stay away from caffeinated sodas, tea, chocolate and coffee. According to Dr. Andrew Weil, coffee beans are often sprayed with the chemical DDT.

Highly Salted Foods

Limit the amount of highly salted foods in your diet because they are hard on your liver. The liver is the organ most responsible for removing toxins and balancing hormones. Avoid canned soup, baked beans, pretzels, chips, pickles, olives and dried foods, such as jerky.

White Foods

Lower the amount of "white" foods you consume. According to Healthy.net, these foods alter estrogen metabolism and can cause fibroids to grow larger. These foods include pasta, white bread, white rice, cakes and cookies.

The fight against fibroid and Endometriosis can easily be won if it’s taken with all seriousness by the patient. Taking Supplements or going for medical procedures are only going to work effectively as you wish if you assist yourself by leading a healthy lifestyle comprising of healthy meals.
