People think landlords are rich. I'm not.
I own one duplex. I live downstairs. I rent
the top unit to help cover the mortgage.
Two years ago, Chloe moved in. 21,
nursing student, two jobs. Quiet. Clean.
Rent always on time. Then November hit.
1st... nothing. 5th.. nothing. On the 10th I
knocked. She looked exhausted. "I'm so
sorry," she said. "My car transmission
died. I had to fix it for clinicals. I have
$200. I need two weeks. Please don't
eviçt me." l'm not rich. I needed that rent
for property taxes. I had every right to
charge a late fee. But I looked at this
terrified kid trying to build a better life.
"Chloe," I said, "didn't you read the
addendum?" "What addendum?"
"Page four. Twelve months on-time
payments= one 'maintenance holiday.
One month waived for loyalty. You hit
twelve months in October. You don't owe
rent this month." She froze. “Are you
serious?"m "'m serious. Keep the $200 for
groceries. See you in December."
I walked downstairs and figured out what
to sell to cover taxes. Then I heard her
crying through the floorboards. Relief,
not sadness.
Best financial decision I've ever made.

I was 7 years old. I had saved for months
to take my mother to dinner for her
birthday. I had $40. I told her we were
going to Red Lobster. She was a single
mother and I was her only daughter. We
never had much money. She worked
several jobs, but Red Lobster was our
little celebration tradition. I wanted us
both to order lobster dinners. Then the
waiter told me the price. My heart sank
when I realized my money could barely
cover one dinner. I felt embarrassed and
disappointed. My mother smiled and
said, "We should share one dinner. I'm
not that hungry anyway" But I knew she
was only trying to make me feel better. I
ordered one lobster dinner and silently
worriedI still might not have enough
money to pay for it. Before the food
came out, I slipped the waiter a note
asking if he could put a candle in a
biscuit because ll couldn't afford dessert.
A few moments later, the waiter returned
carrying TWO full lobster dinners. Full
meals. No shortcuts. Then the manager
walked over and told us to order any
desserts we wanted. I whispered, "Sir, I
don't have enough money for all of this."
He leaned down and smiled. "You're
mistaken. We have a special tonight.
Two lobster dinners with dessert for
mothers and daughters celebrating
birthdays. The total is exactly $40." Then
he winked and walked away. My mother
and | both knew what he had done. And I
have never forgotten that act of
kindness. Neither has she. We've told
this story every birthday since. That
manager at Red Lobster probably never
realized how much he touched our lives
that night.

I went to my son's 5th grade graduation
and witnessed something heartbreaking.
I was sitting behind a boy named Leo.
When the other kids' names were called,
families screamed, blew air hones, and
held up signs. But when "Leo Miller"
was announced, the rOom went silent.
He searched the crowd, hoping to find

took him out for ice cream with our son
that evening.
Sometimes the smallest act of kindness
becomes the loudest memory in
someone's heart. Show up for people
even when you don't know them. A
moment of love can heal a lifetime of
loneliness.

One of my students has been carrying
a kind of sàdnéss no child should ever
know. Today, she walked into class
quieter than usual and stood by my
desk for a second before saying,
"Can I sit with you for a minute? Today
is my dad's birthday."He pásséd away
earlier this year. Nothing else mattered
after that. So today, math could wait.
The lesson plan could wait. Even the
classroom could wait. We got a snack,
looked through the photos she had
saved on her tablet, and let her talk

Because some days, kids don't need
a teacher. They just need someone
safe enough to fall apart with.
