I Thought I Was Helping a Blind Beggar Until He Called Me By My Name

Part 1:

It was raining heavily that evening.
The kind of rain that makes the whole city look blurry, cold, and lonely.
I had just closed from work, tired and frustrated after my boss shouted at me for arriving late.

All I wanted was to get home, remove my wet shoes, and sleep.
As I stood at the crowded bus stop, shivering, I noticed him.
An old blind man sat quietly on the wet pavement.

His clothes were torn.
His walking stick lay beside him.
Rain poured heavily on his frail body, yet nobody seemed to care.
People walked past him as if he didn’t exist.
Some even hissed and avoided him.
In front of him was a small rusty bowl with only two coins inside.
My heart broke.
I reached into my bag and brought out the last ₦1,000 I had.
It was meant for my transport home.
If I gave it to him, I would have to trek in the rain.

But something in me couldn’t walk away.
I bent down and placed the money in his bowl.
Then I removed my umbrella and covered him.
“Please keep this,” I said softly.
The old man slowly lifted his face.
Though his eyes were white and lifeless, his expression changed.

Then he spoke.
And what he said made my blood run cold.
“Thank you… Amara.”
I froze.
My heart skipped.
How did he know my name?
I had never seen this man before in my life.
Slowly, his lips curved into a weak smile.
Then he whispered,
“You’ve grown into a beautiful woman… just like your mother.”
