I cut off 5 inches off my hair exactly 5 days ago. I have not had my hair that short in about 10 years since I started my healthy hair journey.

The journey to 12 inches with some 6-8 inches layers in the front was not intentional. The choice to make the cut is though, and a very necessary one if I am to restart my healthy hair journey.

I am loving the new length though, I can play with styles and new looks which I could not do with a longer length.

Will share later why I had to cut my hair. By the way what do you think of my new look?

Longer length look in gold and black dress was December 2021. Same twist out in May 2024 with my shorter length - my new look.

Last two pictures on the lower right were taken April 2024.

I combed my hair today! ๐Ÿง Yes I know, why the announcement? Well you aren't supposed to comb your hair everyday. Frequent combing or manipulation contribute to free fall of hair. Prior till today, I had not combed my hair for 9 days.

Also comb in sections only after ensuring your hair is tangle free and has enough slip. Depending on the state of your hair, you may need a detangler or a moisturiser or a leave-in conditioner to achieve this.

Who remembers all those nasty salons where you come back with a huge headache due to the horrible way hair is combed at those places ๐Ÿ˜ก.

No wonder we grew up relating pain and hair loss with combing of hair. It shouldn't be.

P.S : You should comb your hair only when absolutely required. At other times, you can just finger comb through and brush the edges.

I have not always had long and full hair. I learnt along the way...

At the beginning...

So people say I have always had long hair. Perhaps, if you count shoulder length hair as being long hair.

Would I say I have always had healthy hair...no! My hair journey started sometimes in late 2015 due to serious postpartum hair loss. The knowledge gathered from research and consistent practice has been invaluable up til now. Please note the length, texture and tips of my hair in the picture below.

Wash Day! Or should I say Wash Night! My hair always benefits from the TLC on wash day. First get the dirt out using a sulphate free shampoo, then, deep condition with a mix of protein and moisture deep conditioners under heat for at least 30 minutes, next comes the leave-in conditioner and lastly, seal all the goodness in with my growth oil. Scalp also gets some goodness with my essential oil mix.

Simple as this sounds, the process takes about 3 hours as I have to be careful to work in sections, braid and unbraid my hair in between, detangle etc. However the result is so good, clean scalp, super moisturised manageable air and I am ready to go with minimal maintenance for the next two to three weeks depending on the hair style I chose to wear.

What is wash day like for you?

Hello weekend! Hope we are having a good one๐Ÿ’ƒ!

Quick notes on buying essential oil:

1. Usually comes in dark bottles to preserve the essence.
2. It takes a lot of leaves to make a single drop of essential oil so you won't see big bottles or jars for sale. Usually comes in 1oz, at most 2 oz. If you see a big bottle, please run, most likely it is not 100% and is diluted.
3. It is not bad to buy essential oils that are mixed with other carrier oils provided it is your preferred carrier oil. However also note the % of essential oil in the mix. You can know this by looking at the position of the oil in the list of ingredients. The further it is at the bottom, the lesser the volume of that oil in the bottle.
4. Beware! oh beware of fragranced oils bottled as essential oils. Please always check the back of the bottle.
5. Best places to buy are usually drugstores or pharmacies if you cannot get a credible online vendor or supermarket that sells.
6. By all means read reviews on the product, that will give you an insight how genuine the product is.

I hope these tips help.

In this video, I am showing you how I mix my essential oils with my carrier oil.

Told you I was going to do something about those chopped edges of mine! Yay! My growth products came in. I have made a post about the wonders of castor oil for edges, please check previous posts or search Castor oil on the page. I am introducing to you the three (drumroll๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ‘) wonder essential oils for hair growth. From left to right, we have:

1. Rosemary essential oil: used for treating alopecia, increases cellular generation which of course means your hair cells get to grow rapidly๐Ÿ˜. Welcome back hair!

2. Peppermint essential oil improves circulation to the scalp which can help promote hair growth during (anagen)growing phase. Also proven to increase the number of follicles and follicles depth. In layman's terms, follicles are the containers for your hair. Follicles are formed before hair can grow out of the follicles. If your hair has ever pulled out due to being stretched too tight, the stressed out hair would most likely come out with the follicles. Restoring follicles is key to restoration of hair growth.

3. Lavender essential oil generates growth of cells, also has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties which can improve scalp health.

In the hierarchy of essential oils used for hair growth, these three are at the top.

Essential oils being extracted directly from leaves are 100% and often too powerful to be used directly on hair or skin without dilution using carrier oils like jojoba oil, coconut oil or olive oil. My chosen carrier oil is castor oil. I want a double whammy portion! Hopefully I will be conscientious enough to apply every night. Even if I don't, I am certain my edges will grow back, even if slower. ๐Ÿ˜

Let's do a progress check in 3 months, shall we?
