WHERE TO START WITH A SKINCARE ROUTINE -

We all desire flawless, even tone skin, we see those stunning models on billboards and covet their smooth skin but more often than not, a lot of people have been totally confused stepping into the murky waters of skincare.

They rely on recommendations from friends who are most likely to not know much on recommending the right products, they just quote what they use or what they heard someone else say is good.

Based on the feedback we've received, a lot of women and men have been through a lot of products, mostly the wrong type of products for their skin type which are heavily chucked with harsh ingredients and this has taken a toll on their skin, overall outlook and taken a huge dent on their self confidence.

So how do you start on a skincare routine, either as a newbie, intermediate or haywire (that is, far gone over the years on all the wrong products, lol, please, pun intended).

1) DETERMINE YOUR SKIN TYPE- When your body is totally devoid of any products, do a test and assessment of your body. This is done by just taking a close look at yourself with the help of a mirror mostly after a rinse down with just water in the bath.

What parts of your body went dry, oily and normal? Some people have just one overall skin type and some have a combination.

Different products are best tailored for different skin types so if you blindly follow trends or wrong recommendations, it will be a case of square plugs trying to fit into circle holes, it just wouldn't fit.

2) BEGIN TO HÝDRATE- A lot of people find it quite hard to stick to this but is vital. The skin is the largest organ of the body and is made up of 64 percent water, so it only makes perfect sense to start to hydrate whether you're a newbie or far gone.

We detailed practical ways to make this work in previous posts. Get a cute little water bottle, wherever you go, buy or ask for sachet water and refill, if that isn't cute enough for your ego or personality, just ask for water wherever you go. If you can work with a water bottle in your bag, slice hydrating fruits and veggies into the water like cucumber and watermelons and drink.

This habit if formed will plump your skin and work wonders for your skin from the inside. Know that you will p*e a lot and your urine has to be clear to know you're hydrated, yellow urine means you're dehydrated hence when people get ill or get involved in accidents, the usual first thing is to give water in the form of drip, water is crucial!.

3) CHOOSING YOUR PRODUCTS- Now that you've determined your skintype, the next step is to pick your products.

People with dry skin should desist from picking oily based moisturizers, this will get you tanner and leave your skin looking like hide of camel, what you need is something hydrating with infused vitamins and hyaluronic acids to heal the dry skin and ofcourse, never forget sunscreen.

Normal skin could use any type of moisturizers but since skin benefits from hydration, my top pick will also be hydrating creams and this also goes for sensitive and combination skin. Apply on damp skin to lock in moisture and give the appearance of wearing foundation all through and of course, never forget sunscreen and for older women or men, invest in products containing collagen to help plump your skin and fade off fine lines and never go to bed with makeup on, this will age you faster, clog your pores and give you acne.

4) EXFOLIATION- You need to slough off dead skin cells in other to allow whatever products you use to sink in. This can be done twice weekly at night and on other days and nights, you use soap only.

Massaging soapy lather onto your body is a form of massaging yourself which will keep your skin looking smooth and spend less at the spas. That is the basics to starting on a skincare routine.
