THE SCIENCE OF HOW CLEANSERS WORK FOR OILY SKIN 🧬

Oily skin needs cleansers that remove excess sebum without stripping the skin.

Here’s how they work

* Surfactants that attach to oil, lift it from the pores, and wash it away when you rinse.

* Some cleansers use ingredients like salicylic acid or mild AHAs to control sebum production and dissolve buildup.

* Good cleansers stay close to skin’s pH (~5.5). This keeps the acid mantle intact so the skin doesn’t overproduce oil as a reaction.

* Oil soluble acids enter clogged pores and dissolve the mixture of sebum and dead skin that forms blackheads and whiteheads.

In essence, this is why you need a cleanser as a person with oily skin to remove excess oil effectively, prevent clogged pores and calm acne-prone skin.

Clay masks are powered by absorption and adsorption which are scientific actions that deeply cleanse the skin.

Here’s how they work.

* Absorption: Clays like bentonite and kaolin act like tiny sponges. They pull excess oil, sweat, and impurities out of the pores.

THE SCIENCE OF HYPERPIGMENTATION 🧬

Hyperpigmentation happens when your skin produces too much melanin which is the pigment that gives skin its color. This extra melanin doesn’t spread evenly, so it settles in patches, causing dark spots or uneven tone.

Here’s a few reasons why it happens

* Anything that irritates or injures the skin can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) including acne, burns, harsh products and picking your skin. Based on personal experience,I find that picking your skin can cause repeat scarring in an area even when you don’t pick at your skin after it heals the first time.

* UV rays activate melanocytes(basically melanin-producing cells). The more exposure, the more melanin they push out. This is why dark spots deepen when unprotected.

* Pregnancy, birth control, hormonal imbalance, or stress can overstimulate pigment cells and trigger melasma

* Melanin-rich skin naturally has more active melanocytes, making it more prone to hyperpigmentation after injury or inflammation. It’s not a hygiene problem.

* Some drugs or medical conditions increase sensitivity and melanin production.

When these happen, the following occurs.

* When triggered, melanocytes produce melanin inside tiny “packages” called melanosomes

* When triggered, melanocytes make more melanin

* Normal skin cells carry this melanin to the surface and it clusters, forming visible dark spots commonly known as hyperpigmentation.

Here are science - backed ways to them

* Exfoliants: AHAs (glycolic/lactic) + BHAs help shed pigmented cells.

* Pigment Inhibitors: Ingredients that slow melanin production like niacinamide and azelaic acid.

* Retinoids to speed up cell turnover and push old pigment out faster.

* SPF daily to prevent UV rays from darkening the spots

While I advise people to use sunscreen and even recommend them, I unfortunately don’t use sunscreen because I always break out hives. If you’re like me, please raise your hand 😩. Until I can find the sunscreen that works for me, I’ll use my moisturiser to hold my side 😅.

People with normal skin sometimes skip skincare routines because they think they don’t “need” it.
