A Mother’s Day meditation about patriarchy I wrote while pregnant. Then used AI to generate the song and video a year later. To answer: How did men gain power? Hammurabi’s code, the birth of “equality under law,” valued women’s lives as half of men’s. The punishment for killing a common woman was half that of killing a common man. For a noble woman killed: the murderer was killed. For a noble man killed: the murderer’s daughter was killed. Anthropologists like my friend Helen Fisher suggest early hunter-gatherers were more decentralized and more egalitarian. Gathering, largely done by women, was a more reliable source of calories than hunting, tho meat had better nutrition. Women contributed more calories. Then came agriculture. Land ownership. Inheritance— to oldest son. The plow—heavier than the hoe—shifting labor toward male physicality. Between ownership and caloric contribution, men began to dominate. All of this lived in my head during pregnancy— as I experienced the quintessence of femaleness. The greatest creative act dismissed as mundane. But the mundane is miraculous. Imagine the shape of time. Most men imagine a line. Most women imagine a circle. If you took a snapshot of global belief systems in 1800 BC, most saw time as a circle: cycles, seasons, karma, return. With the rise of Abrahamic traditions, time becomes a line → directional, unfolding. For thousands of years, society has been shaped by a male way of thinking. We are seeing that change. Thank you Mom and mothers everywhere who made history happen. Even if history does not honor them. Women are not perfect victims. Men are not monsters. This is not a simple story. Things have improved enormously. But are still unequal. Power remains uneven globally. and even tremendous progress cannot compensate for the past. I don’t have answers.
