Witches, this one's important ⛰️

As pagan practitioners, our craft begins with the land. Every ritual, every herb gathered, every moonrise watched, every ancestor honoured is rooted in our relationship with nature.

Here in Aotearoa, we are incredibly fortunate that around a third of our whenua is protected as conservation land. These forests, mountains, rivers, wetlands and coastlines are more than beautiful places, they are living ecosystems, sacred spaces, and taonga that have been safeguarded for future generations.

These spaces are under threat.
The current coalition government want to make these sacred spaces available for economic opportunities.
Conservation Minister, Tama Potaka, has proposed amendments to our conservation act that completely change the primary aim of the department.
Minister Shane Jones has proudly championed a "drill, baby, drill" approach to New Zealand's natural resources, and yesterday said it was ridiculous that 33% our country is unable to make money because it sits within the conservation estate.
The outcry from New Zealanders has been phenomenal.

Overnight, the Minister of Conservation announced a U-turn, saying he has heard the overwhelming opposition from New Zealanders and will remove the clause allowing the disposal (sale) of conservation land from the Bill.
While that is a welcome step, it does not address the heart of the problem. The Bill still fundamentally rewrites the purpose of conservation by requiring the Department of Conservation to recognise economic opportunities and enable the use and development of conservation land "to the greatest extent practicable." That represents a profound shift away from conservation as the primary purpose of our protected lands and towards economic development.
This opens the door to activities such as mining and other industrial developments.
This wording is careful because the Bill itself does not explicitly say "we want to mine national parks." Rather, it changes the legal framework in a way that makes developments possible.
Tama Potaka says he will change the wording, but I don't believe it changes their intentions.

For those of us whose spirituality is grounded in the natural world, this matters.To honour the Earth is to stand up for it. To work with the elements is to protect them. To walk a pagan path is to recognise our rights and responsibilities as kaitiaki.

While it may be tempting to hex a minister or two, I do only encourage magick for positive creation. Witches have always known that magic works through the mundane as well. A well-written submission, a shared post, and thousands of voices raised together can be some of the most powerful spells we cast.
Democracy only works when we participate.

Please take a few minutes to make a submission on the Conservation Amendment Bill. Even a short submission tells Parliament that New Zealanders care deeply about protecting our conservation estate. You can write a long list of why this land must be treasured, or you can simply say:
"I OPPOSE this bill and recommend it be revoked in its entirety"
