Expert Tips to Avoiding a Hangover
Here is some information that may be familiar, but there are also some facts and tidbits you probably did not know. We realize you may not need this information, but it will be very helpful for a “friend.” With the holidays coming up it is a great article to share, and your friends will thank you.
6 Things That Practically Guarantee a Hangover
While the only true way to prevent a hangover is not drinking alcohol at all, you don't have to give up all your social fun if you avoid these mistakes.
You drink on an empty stomach
Drinking on an empty stomach makes it more likely to have a horrible hangover the next morning. Why? Alcohol gets in to your blood stream quickly as it can be directly absorbed through the stomach wall. Having some food in your stomach slows down absorption and helps keep your blood sugar levels more steady.
You don't drink enough water
Alcohol is a diuretic so it can lead to dehydration. Drinking water while you booze it up will help you stay hydrated, which will minimize your hangover symptoms the next morning. Drinking a glass of water in-between drinks and before bed can be very helpful.
You drink too much too fast
Be careful with the shots. Next time you're offered a shot of Jagermeister, you may want to reconsider. Your body can only metabolize 1-2 ounces of alcohol per hour, so drinking too much too quickly can overwhelm your body's ability to rid itself of ethanol.
The color of your liquor
Weird but true: The darker your beverage, the more severe your hangover is likely to be. The same additives that give liquors like bourbon and whiskey their trademark mahogany colors also add to your pounding head and queasy stomach the morning after. The color in high-end alcohol brands is more likely to be naturally occurring, but cheap fillers and ingredients are often used in cheaper brands to maintain color. This doesn't mean that light-colored drinks can't cause hangovers. If you drink too much alcohol of any color, you won't likely wake up refreshed and feeling great.
You reach for the hair of the dog
It's a myth that doesn't ever seem to die, but having a drink in the morning is simply numbing the pain and prolonging the symptoms. It's better to rehydrate with sports drink, soup, coffee or tea, or even just plain water.
You don't sleep
If you've ever split a bottle (or two) of wine with friends and then laid in bed wondering why you couldn't fall asleep, you can blame it on the alcohol. Ethanol is well-known for disrupting the quality of your sleep, so even if you pass out as soon as your head hits the pillow, don't be surprised if you jolt awake suddenly in the middle of the night and can’t fall back asleep. The bad news is that a lack of sleep simply magnifies your symptoms, and a lot of detoxification happens while you sleep.

Water: Is It Possible To Get Too Much Of A Good Thing?
It’s common to see advice about how much water you should drink, and too often the implication is you should just “drink as much as you can” or something similar.
In rare cases, drinking an extreme amount in a short time can be dangerous. It can cause the level of salt, or sodium, in your blood to drop too low. That's a condition called hyponatremia. It's very serious, and can be fatal. You may hear it called water intoxication. When sodium levels drop due to excess water consumption, fluids shifts from the outside to the inside of cells, causing them to swell. Excess fluid accumulation in the brain is called cerebral edema, which can affect the brain stem and cause central nervous system dysfunction.
Your healthy kidneys can eliminate about 5.3-7.4 gallons (20-28 liters) of water a day, but they can't get rid of more than 27-33 ounces (0.8-1.0 liters) per hour.
Therefore, in order to avoid hyponatremia symptoms, you should not drink more than 27-33 ounces (0.8-1.0 liters) of water per hour, on average.
In addition to water, other foods and beverages you ingest also contribute to your overall daily fluid intake. Although it varies based on temperature, activity level, etc, most people can maintain healthy hydration with 6-10 cups of water per day.
