BUGHAT

Sypmtoms reported:
Chills
Fever
Body pain or body malaise (sakit sa lawas)
Sakit sa ulo
Fatigue (Extreme tiredness)
Often bleeding
Falling hair

Unsa ang bughat?
General expression sa gabation nga sakit sa bagong anak.

It is not in medical books. Or a legit medical diagnosis. But BUGHAT is a real experience mothers go through.

But let's break it down with science so we can be fully informed on what to do.

Bughat is a general term. If translated to western terms, can mean any post-partum fever (infection, breast engorgement, mastitis, fatigue, hypertension, bleeding)

But it is not the illness per se. Makabati kag bughat. To address it we need to know what is causing it and how to address it to keep mom safe.

Here are some symptoms associated with BUGHAT and how best to address it:

🤕Headache and dizziness
High blood pressure after birth can be felt as headaches and dizzyness along with a BP higher than 140/90. Drinking herbs and non medical interventions cannot help along with tahuyop, massage, and paaso.

What to do? Medical intervention is necessary! Seek doctor's help! If mom experiences headaches and has consistent high BP trust your healthcare provider with the meds provided. It is still safe to manage postpartum hypertension along with continued breastfeeding.

🤒Fever and Chills
A fever if not from an infection may come from breast inflammation. "Kahilantanon" feeling can be felt when the breasts are full, heavy and in pain. The breast pain is often brushed off and a mother is more focused on the fever. When in fact the fever comes from the breast pain first.

Chills or pangurog. Rapid contraction and relaxation of the muscles creates heat. It boosts the core temperature to kill an infection.

Increased heat kills bad germs. It can also cause dilation or for ducts to open up. If breasts are full of milk, heat dilates milk ducts to help drain and pass milk out.

What to do? Address milk fullness, latch effectively and do lactation massage.

😩Fatigue and body malaise (Kakapoy, sakit sa lawas)
To save energy, our body focuses on more important activities like taking pain away from the breast, creating breastmilk, fighting off an infection or illness, recovering from stress of labor. We experience lower energy so we won't move too much and spend excess energy. If there is already breast fullness it is also a cause of the body pain.

What to do? Rest. Sleep. Ask for help. A safe postnatal massage can help.

💥Bleeding
After birth there will be normal bleeding called "LOCHIA". Rubra. Serosa. Alba. These discharges are NORMAL and may last until 36 days.
Rubra (red brown 12-6days) >>Serosa (brown pink)>> Alba (yellow white)
Days vary but the discharges should not be heavy enough to soak pads.

What to do? Change frequently and practice proper hygiene. Discharges are NORMAL. If pads get soaked fast (dali mapuno ug malapsan and discharges are bright red)GET HELP. Contact your health care provider asap.

💇🏽‍♀️Hairfall
Hairfall is not from bughat. It is from hormonal changes. From pregnancy hormones causing fast hair growth (hair included) to increased hairfall because of losing your pregnancy hormones

What to do? Cut hair short. Use gentle hair products. And just deal with it and manage expectations.

Whoo! Dili lalim ang bagong anak! So please be kind to yourselves and take it slow. Find help! Accept help!

As much as newborn babies need care, so do new mamas.

Iwas bughat? Rest. Get help. Be healthy. Set expectations.

Na bughat na ba ka? Hali na! Pagpa-ALIMA!

Case Reports Indian J Public Health 1999 Jan-Mar;43(1):10, 25.
Case study of a lactating grandmother
S Patnaik 1, S Sharma, S Sinha, K Roy

PMID: 11243080
Abstract
PIP: This is a case study of a lactating grandmother. Thini Bai, married for 34-36 years and living in the village of Pantaniya, had been through menopause 3-4 years prior to her condition. A grandson named Bantu, whose mother had died of malaria two days after his birth, was left under her care. She related that she had let Bantu suckle at her breast to pacify him. After a while she noticed changes in her breast size and fullness, in the color spread of the areolae, and in ni**le consistency. Eventually, milk was being secreted. She continued to breast-feed 8-10 times a day as she had done when she was a mother. An increase in weight of 75 g in the child was subsequently noted. At the time of investigation, Bantu's age was 6 months and his weight was 6.5 kg. This is a unique case of a postmenopausal grandmother lactating after a minimum of 16 years since last lactation.

No extra water is needed for exclusively breastfed babies (6 months and below) until solids are introduced.

During hot weather, breastfeed often to quench your baby's thirst.

“When pregnant, the cells of the baby migrate into the mothers bloodstream and then circle back into the baby, it’s called “fetal-maternal microchimerism”.

For 41 weeks, the cells circulate and merge backwards and forwards, and after the baby is born, many of these cells stay in the mother’s body, leaving a permanent imprint in the mothers tissues, bones, brain, and skin, and often stay there for decades. Every single child a mother has afterwards will leave a similar imprint on her body, too.

Even if a pregnancy doesn't go to full term or if you have an abortion, these cells still migrate into your bloodstream.

Research has shown that if a mother's heart is injured, fetal cells will rush to the site of the injury and change into different types of cells that specialize in mending the heart.

The baby helps repair the mother, while the mother builds the baby.

How cool is that?

This is often why certain illnesses vanish while pregnant.

It’s incredible how mothers bodies protect the baby at all costs, and the baby protects & rebuilds the mother back - so that the baby can develop safely and survive.

Think about crazy cravings for a moment. What was the mother deficient in that the baby made them crave?

Studies have also shown cells from a fetus in a mothers brain 18 years after she gave birth. How amazing is that?”

If you’re a mom you know how you can intuitively feel your child even when they are not there….Well, now there is scientific proof that moms carry them for years and years even after they have given birth to them.

I find this to be so very beautiful.

Breastmilk and chrononutrition.

Did you know your breastmilk tonight has different components to your breastmilk later at dawn, early morning, noon and afternoon?

In 24 hours your breastmilk changes according to different needs throughout the day.

Tonight your breastmilk is high in tryptophan which helps increase melatonin to help your baby sleep at night. There are higher sleep inducing nucleotides and proteins in your night time milk! Prolactin is highest at dawn so you make fattier milk in the wee hours of dawn. (prolactin will make your baby want to feed more at night. but at the same time it will prime him with sleep inducing hormones)

Tomorrow morning there will be higher activity-promoting hormones. Potassium, magnesium, zinc and sodium are highest in the morning. Iron peaks at noon. Day time is the most active time where they are exposed to people and different activities so they will be exposed to different germs. Your milk will have highest antibodies during daytime.

Isn't our breastmilk wonderfully made?

As you have noticed newborn babies have everything flipped! Night is wakeful feedings. Day is deep peaceful sleeps. Breastfeeding your baby will teach him day and night (eventually)

So survive tonight's sleepless night and the nights thereafter. Your breastmilk will teach your baby and you will be alright!

Canned milk vs. Alive milk? Uniform nutrition or dynamic nutrition?

Breastfeeding is hard but it is definitely worth it.

Breastmilky good night mommy!
