The relationship between olfaction and pain is complex and involves links between structures and cells in the olfactory and nervous systems. A controlled clinical trial evaluated the benefits of a protocol designed to activate the olfactory system using specific smell exercises and essential oils. Eucalyptus was used for the trigeminal olfactory system, lavender for the pure olfactory system, and clove for the mixed system. Pain was evaluated by fMRI and changes in brain activation patterns associated with pain perception and emotional processing. The study concluded that inhaling essential oils significantly reduced pain and could potentially "revolutionize non-pharmacological pain therapy."
