Remedies for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common digestive disorder characterized by abdominal pain, cramping, and changes in normal bowel function, including bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation.
So far, scientific support for the claim that any remedy can treat IBS is fairly lacking, but several of them are in use.
Other Names for IBS
Spastic colon
Spastic colitis
Mucous colitis
Nervous diarrhea
Nervous colon
Nervous or functional bowel disorder
Enteric-Coated Peppermint Oil
Enteric-coated peppermint oil is widely used for irritable bowel syndrome. It is purported to reduce the abdominal pain and bloating. Peppermint is considered a carminative herb, which means that it is used to eliminate excess gas in the intestines. It also has anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxing properties that may be helpful.
Although further research is needed, studies published in 2019 indicate that it may ease symptoms of IBS. Although peppermint oil is available in many forms, it should only be used in enteric-coated capsules, which don't dissolve until they reach the intestines, because otherwise the oil can relax the lower esophageal sphincter and cause heartburn.
In its 2021 guidelines for diagnosing and treating IBS, the American College of Gastroenterology recommended peppermint oil for easing abdominal pain and global symptoms of IBS.
Peppermint oil, in excessive doses, may result in nausea, loss of appetite, heart problems, nervous system disorders, and lead to kidney failure and even death.4
Peppermint oil should not be taken internally by children or pregnant or nursing women. Peppermint oil may interact with the drug cyclosporine (used to prevent organ transplant rejection and for rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis), so they should not be combined unless under medical supervision.
Probiotics
Probiotics are "friendly" bacteria in the digestive system that play a role in promoting a healthy, balanced gut and immune system. Probiotics are naturally occurring in certain foods, including yogurt, cottage cheese and fermented foods, and are also available in supplement form for purchase at your local pharmacy or grocery store.
While the exact cause of IBS is not well understood, research has suggested that an imbalance in gut bacterial communities, also called “dysbiosis,” could be a contributing factor.5 This suggests that effort to promote balance, such as increasing probiotics, can help alleviate symptoms—and there is a growing body of research that does support the positive link between probiotics and IBS relief.6
Increased research and significant interest notwithstanding, most doctors still do not formally recommend probiotics in treating irritable bowel syndrome. The American Gastroenterology Association's (AGA) 2020 clinical practice guidelines do not recommend the use of probiotics in children and adults with irritable bowel syndrome except in the context of a clinical trial. The ACG also recommends against probiotics.
Partially Hydrolyzed Guar Gum
Partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG) is a water-soluble, non-gelling fiber that may help to reduce constipation and to a lesser extent diarrhea and abdominal pain in people with irritable bowel syndrome. PHGG is purported to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria, lactobacilli, and bifidobacteria in the intestines.
Food Intolerances
According to some alternative medicine practitioners, food intolerances may play a role in irritable bowel syndrome, possibly by triggering immune responses in the gut leading to low-grade inflammation and an imbalance of intestinal bacteria.
Although not scientifically proven, the most common food intolerances associated with irritable bowel syndrome are dairy, wheat, and gluten.
A growing body of research points to the effectiveness of the low-FODMAP diet for IBS. FODMAPs are specific types of carbohydrates that are difficult to digest. The ACG recommends a limited trial of this diet as part of its treatment protocol.

Here are some of tried and tested home remedies for acidity and gas problems:
1. Herbal teas
Drinking warm beverages like herbal teas can work wonderfully well in relieving gas and acidity problems. Moreover, they are also beneficial in treating other digestive disorders like abdominal bloating. Some herbal teas you can try include:
Ginger tea
Ginger contains “Gingerol” and is loaded with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies assert that drinking ginger tea before or with meals stimulates the secretion of saliva and neutralizes the gastric acid.
Chamomile tea
Chamomile boasts anti-inflammatory and mind-calming properties. Health experts suggest that drinking chamomile tea before meals and bedtime can reduce indigestion, bloating, and trapped gas.
Fennel tea
Fennel or Saunf is loaded with antibacterial properties that help in reducing acidity. Fennel seeds also contain oils that can be helpful in relieving indigestion and bloating.
Moreover, you can also brew Ajwain (carom seeds) and Tulsi (holy basil) with water to make herbal tea as these ingredients are highly helpful in easing gastric issues.
2. Buttermilk
Cold buttermilk is an old school remedy for acidity and gas problems. It can neutralize the gastric acids and prevent them from irritating and damaging the stomach lining. Moreover, buttermilk is also a great source of probiotics, making it a perfect drink for relieving stomach discomforts.
3. Cold milk
Various studies assert that cold milk helps in stabilizing the gastric acid and preventing its build-up in the stomach. However, lactose intolerant people should refrain from consuming milk as it can aggravate their problem.
4. Chia seeds
Chia seeds are loaded with anti-inflammatory properties and can aid in treating the symptoms associated with acidity or acid reflux. They are also a great source of essential nutrients, fibre, and omega-3 fatty acids, making them highly beneficial for the stomach.
5. Coconut water
Drinking coconut water turns the body’s pH levels alkaline. It helps in producing mucous that can safeguard the stomach from the harmful effects of excessive acid production.
Apart from the above-mentioned points, you can also decide on various ayurvedic remedies for treating stomach discomforts. For instance, many experts suggest patients to try a Vata Dosha pacifying diet for relieving their acidity problems.

❗️SUMMARY OF HABITS THAT CAUSE STOMACH PAIN YOU MAY NOT KNOW❗️
1. Habits of living
1.1.Smoking
Smoking not only harms the respiratory system but also harms the stomach. Regular smokers are prone to gastritis. Ni****ne contained in to***co will damage the gastric mucosa by stimulating blood vessel constriction, reducing the blood supply to the gastric mucosa, inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins that play a protective role in restoring the gastric mucosa. , promote acid secretion, and pepsin directly corrodes the gastric mucosa.
1.2.Abuse of drugs
Many medications can cause pain, ulcers, or stomach bleeding if used incorrectly. Among the drugs that are often abused are corticosteroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, diclofenac, indomethacin, piroxicam...
Corticosteroids can cause severe gastric ulcers leading to gastric perforation. One of the common side effects caused by the NSAID group is peptic ulcer, stomach bleeding. All NSAIDs have the common characteristic that they are acid derivatives with poor solubility. These derivatives, when in the acidic environment of the stomach, are difficult to dissolve and will accumulate in clusters in the stomach, increasing the risk of ulcers.
1.3.Let the body catch cold
The stomach is a very sensitive organ to the outside climate and temperature. The habit of bathing late or dressing appropriately, causing the body to catch a cold will cause the stomach to spasm, causing symptoms such as stomach pain, indigestion, vomiting...
2.Eating habits
2.1. Eating at the wrong time
The stomach is an organ with a very tight “timetable”. During a day, the secretion of gastric juice is sometimes less cyclical to facilitate the timely digestion of food. At a fixed hour, the stomach habitually secretes acid to digest food. If you do not eat at this time, the amount of acid produced will "reflect" the owner, thereby causing stomach ulcers. Therefore, if you skip meals or eat at the wrong time, it will increase the risk of stomach pain, stomach ulcers.
2.2. Eat too fast
If you eat too quickly, saliva does not secrete enough glycoproteins and amylase enzymes to puree, metabolize and digest food, causing food not to be thoroughly crushed in the mouth, directly transferred to the stomach when still in its raw form. damage to the gastric mucosa, increase the burden and working time for the stomach, fatigue the stomach muscles and reduce gastric motility.
2.3. Overeating at dinner
Many people have a habit of skipping breakfast, eating lunch through the speakers, then eating a lot at dinner or before going to bed and eating at night will harm the stomach in particular and the digestive system in general. Eating too much at dinner or at night will cause bloating, stomach overload, excessive secretion of gastric juice, damaging the stomach lining, gradually leading to ulcers. Moreover, eating too much at dinner also increases the risk of obesity, sleep disorders.
2.4. Eating is not hygienic
Unhygienic eating is the cause of acute gastritis, stomach pain, bloating, nausea... Helicobacter pylori bacteria can be transmitted through dirty food, leading to gastritis, even gastritis. Stomach cancer is very dangerous.
