The Philippine National Police (PNP) denies claims that there was an assassination attempt against Magsasaka Partylist nominee Lejun Dela Cruz, clarifying that the incident was a legitimate operation to serve an arrest warrant.

PNP spokesperson PBGen. Jean Fajardo said police officers were executing a warrant issued by a Las Piñas City court for murder charges when Dela Cruz attempted to flee, ramming multiple vehicles and injuring a police officer in the process.

“Wala pong katotohanan na there was an assasination attempt against the life po ni Mr. Dela Cruz. In fact on the contrary, siya pa po ang namutok at siya pa po ang nanagasa. At ang pulis nating nasagasaan ayan naka confine po. Mag fracture siya sa pelvic dahil siya po binangga,” Fajardo said.

Authorities recovered a .45 caliber handgun, leading to additional charges of violating the election gun ban, multiple counts of malicious mischief, and frustrated homicide.

Dela Cruz remains in police custody at the Eastern Police District in Pasig.

Magsasaka party-list earlier said that Dela Cruz survived an ambush in Cainta, Rizal on Sunday morning.

Dela Cruz is a former member of the Alex Boncayao Brigade, a breakaway faction of the New People's Army.

He has since been involved in organizing farmers and workers after leaving the guerilla life.
