*CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE (CKD).*

*Early CKD often has no sign or symptoms. A person can lose up to
90% of their kidney function before experiencing any signs.

*SYMPTOMS OF KIDNEY FAILURE*

• Once a person has reached kidney failure, they must go on dialysis or get a kidney transplant to survive.

• Dialysis does not make the kidneys better, it replaces the job healthy kidneys would normally do.
• But, dialysis is not a perfect replacement for normal kidneys. Dialysis only does some of the work that
healthy kidneys do. This is why health complications still arise for people on dialysis.
• Kidney failure usually does not happen suddenly. It is a gradual progression of kidney disease getting worse
over time, due to uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure.
• So once a person reaches kidney failure, the symptoms can be quite severe.
*Some of the symptoms of late-stage kidney disease or kidney failure are:*
• Back pain
• Dry itchy skin
• Metallic taste in the mouth
• Confusion
• Nausea and vomiting
• Loss of appetite
• Swelling in the hands, face, feet and ankles
• Urine is dark, foamy, and/or bubbly
• Frequent shortness of breath
• Urinating more or less than normal.
