Last November 10, 2019, the PGH Division of Dermatology held a medical mission at the Manila City Jail (MCJ), as part of the Philippine Dermatological Society’s (PDS) Skin Week 2019 and the International Society of Dermatology’s World Skin Health Day, as part of a movement during which a total of 98 free clinics will be held and approximately 12,000 patients treated nationwide.
The day began with all 15 residents of the Division, accompanied by seven of our consultants, Dr. Francisca Roa, Dr. Eileen Cubillan, Dr. Cynthia Ciriaco-Tan, Dr. Claudine Yap-Silva, Dr. Winlove Mojica, Dr. Christina Batac, and Dr. Carmela Dayrit-Castro, holding a Skin Clinic at the jail, counseling almost three hundred patients on their various ailments, and dispensing free oral and topical medications. Patients who were waiting to be seen watched public health lecture videos made by students of the UP College of Medicine. Lunch and a short photo session followed afterwards, during which the warden, Mr. Randel Latoza, graciously thanked the Division for partnering with MCJ for the third year in a row. Our esteemed consultant, Dr. Roa, responded by saying that it was both the Division of Dermatology’s privilege and responsibility to give back to the nation. It was a fruitful day for the division, and a good start to our participation in PDS’ Skin Week 2019!

7 tips to help take care of dry, cracked heels
Your heels are very easy to dry and crack, especially in the fall and winter. To care for dry and cracked heels, follow these tips from dermatologists:
1. Limit long bath, shower only for 5-10 minutes. Bathing for too long can dry out your skin, aggravating dry, cracked heels. Use a dry towel to gently pat your skin dry after bathing.
2. Use a gentle, fragrance-free shower gel. This will help retain the natural oils in your skin.
3. Apply moisturizer within 5 minutes of bathing, use a moisturizer containing 10-25% urea, salicylic acid apply to your heels immediately after bathing while skin is still damp and whenever your heels are you feel dry to lock in moisture.
4. Before going to bed, use a moisturizer such as vaseline, lanolin, etc. Consider wearing socks at night to enhance the ability to moisturize and prevent moisture from sticking to your bedding.
5. Protect your heels. During the day, apply a liquid bandage over the cracks in the heel to create a protective barrier, which can help relieve pain, speed healing, and prevent germs from entering the skin.
6. Wear suitable shoes. If you have dry and cracked heels, avoid shoes with open heels, such as flip flops or sandals, loafers, or shoes that don't fit properly.
7. Cracked heels can be a medical condition, like diabetes, atopic dermatitis, etc. If your dry, cracked heels are too severe or don't improve after applying these remedies. For the above method, you should visit a dermatology medical facility to be directly examined by a doctor and do the necessary tests.
